Hello,
My neice and her husband called me yesterday. They just got a DSL account so they can get on the internet. They showed me two old computers and said to choose the best one to work with. I chose one and took it home and installed Windows 98 SE on it. Everything seemed to be working except the ethernet card. The DSL modem had a USB connector on it so we tried to connect that way. It didn't work. I called tech support and the tech told me to remove all of the USB devices Under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in Device Manager and reinstall them. After a while, he told me he couldn't help me. It finally came to me to install the ethernet card in another slot and it worked. Okay.. we are on the internet and the computer was working okay.
Then came time to see if her USB Flashdrive would work. It didn't. We got on the internet and found a driver to enable the flash drive to work. It didn't work. I was checking things in Device Manager under "USB Serial Bus Controllers" again.
Well..... there were three things there before the tech told me to remove them, and now there are only two. I have no idea what the third one was. Most devices require their own driver for USB in w98. Only a few generic devices work without a driver. Visit the manufacturer's site for the flash drive and see if they have a driver for it.
