Slow Startup since last BSOD crash...

  • Hi,
    Here's the deal:

My omputer was up for 6 days without reboots and such, everything was working fine and 2 days ago I was working on a website, lots of applications were opened and so on; and suddenly, I got this BSOD.

This BSOD didn't have any type of error messages like XXXX_XXXXX_XXXXXXXX_XXXX or with numbers like 0xXXXXXXX nor with filenames, just the usual bla bla talk from the microsoft and nothing else, so I couldn't see where the error was came from.

However, since that crash Outpost (v2.1) and Norton Antivirus (2004 Pro) are starting up really slow... First the antivirus icon appears on the systray but with a red X (meaning it's not enabled) but after a while the red x disappears and it gets enabled but it takes some time like 1-2 minutes to do it and this never happened before.
About Outpost, it takes some time to show up in the systray like 3-5minutes since this crash... and this was also not like this, it used to be pretty quick.

Btw, now the first outpost icon to apper is the exe one (like the logo on the top of the forum) and after a while the icon that appears is the one about my current policy.
Is this from v2.1? I installed v2.1 when I got this BSOD and before that the policy icon would appear and not the exe one.

P.S.: This is probably not directly related about Outpost cuz I have slow startup problems with Antivirus too since this crash though I dunno where I should ask help and maybe someone here can help me.

    Thanks.

  • Many complain of NAV but just as many sing of its praises. As for me, it will never touch any of my PCs. And you are right heart - error messages are your friends. To be of any help the exact wording from the BSOD message is required. Whatever caused the BSOD is most likely making the software drag. It may help to reinstall OP and NAV but maybe not. If it was my PC, I'd rule out malware and then continue troubleshooting the BSOD, searching for the cause.

  • you may wish to try avast (free for homes users)It has a messenger provider for scanning MSN , YAHOO,TRILLIAN,ICQ and AIM ,file transfers. It also has P2P provider for file sharing programmes. There is an avast free tool cleaner that lists bagle, including b variant in its removal database.

  • Sounds like spyware to me.

The routine is to check for malware and viruses.

    Start with the junk:
    http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)

    Run an updated virus scan

  • I would suggest trying a startup with Norton Antivirus disabled if you have not done so already - it could be attempting Internet access and (when blocked by Outpost) holding up other processes. Having your PC disconnected on startup would avoid this since there would be no Internet connection for NAV to use.

  • Bagle is a recent virus so will not be picked up unless you have updated your virus definition file (this should be done at least weekly) although Stinger should have picked it up. For a detailed description plus ways to check if your system is infected and manual removal instructions, check here (http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100965.htm).

Norton Antivirus 2004 uses Product Activation as do all of Symantec's products now - this is why people recommend avoiding them. In a worst case situation (where you need to restart your system using a recovery disk or CD), you do not want Product Activation issues compounding the problem. Check Grisoft AVG (www.grisoft.com) for a free solution (you just need to supply an email address to get a registration key) - Eset's NOD32 (http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm) seems to be recommended by many here and elsewhere (I've not tried it personally though).

I turned on Verifier and it goes to the BSOD during boot, just as predicted, had to endure an excruciatingly slow system for the last couple of days.

If you have not already done so, check your startup programs using msconfig and try unchecking any suspicious entries.

  • But I had updated virus defitions...

I thank you for letting me know of those antivirus software but I don't really like any of them :/

maybe Agnitum could code one? :D

  • Nazgulled;

I tend to agree with Manny Carvallo, and would check the system for any spy/add/spam-ware. Thou I feel a relevant infection here may be unlikely, since your problem seems to be a lower level issue; then again I think some spyware may come in at the lower level – hence Outpost starts protecting already at that level.

BSOD information may be hard to interpret, but can give vital clues as to the origin of the problem – so any info you might have here, could be useful.

As to Norton AV, well, it’s always the slowest to start and also slows down your whole system performance quiet significantly. It’s rather bloated software and perhaps not the best or most efficient AV solution out there – and I don’t really care what the various tests/trophies won/etc say, there are better solutions out there!

Anyway, try uninstalling Outpost and Norton AV completely, using the normal Add/Remove Control Panel applet first, and then a registry cleaning tool such as jv16 PowerTools which you can get here:

    http://www.macecraft.com/

Once you have made sure that all previous traces of Outpost and Norton AV have been eliminated from your system, reload OP and then Norton AV – I would prefer that order, but it may not be crucial – and checking that everything is in order before installing the next software package.

Also, before re-installing the software, check that all your drivers are up-to-date and working as well as can be expected, and that the Windows OS has all the latest patches, fixes and updates.

BTW, which version of Windows are you running here?

Oh, it’s quiet normal for the OP icon to first start with its normal exe icon and then change to its current policy mode – I understand that that behaviour is by design.

One last thing regarding Norton AV:

something hangs in my head, that Outpost and Norton don’t like to come across each other on the same system – you might want to check up on this one, or perhaps Paranoid 2000 can clarify this one (please).

Also, I’ve come across a fair amount of stability complains in various newsgroups related to Norton AV Pro 2004. As far as I understand, some users prefer the previous (2003) version. Since I don’t use either, I’m the wrong person here to troubleshoot any possible compatibility issues any further.

    hope this helps - heart

  • OK...
I think I realized the problem :D dunno how to fix it though... if it's even possible...

I have a router and that is why outpost takes a bit long to load... if I unplug the cable from the router (the cable that goes from my computer to the router) and reboot the computer... windows startstup really fast, and everything including outpost startups really quickly... I think this ahs to do with outpost cuz if the cable is plugged but outpost is uninstalled, the startup is fast too...

    Any tips?

  • Nazgulled,

I would suggest checking the size of your Outpost log (the file op_data.mdb in the Outpost program folder) - a very large log would cause Outpost to take more time starting up and would probably give Norton indigestion if it is scanning it each time.

If it is large, then use Action/Clear Log... in the Log Viewer to remove all the data and File/Log cleanup settings... to keep the size within reasonable limits. It may also be worth excluding this file from scanning by Norton - it is a data file not an executable so should not harbour any viruses.

The Outpost logo is new with 2.1 - it signifies when the GUI has fully started. Until then, Outpost blocks all network traffic.

  • all net home networks pcs have static ip address... and there's only 3 pcs conencted to the router and it supports a maximum of four...

however dhcp server is enabled but the ips are always the same for each machine... should I disable it?

  • Make sure that you have not inadvertently blocked DHCP. Personally unless there are an unusually large number of PC's behind the router I would use a static IP address.

  • I have a made a full scan with norton (updated) and nothing was found, however I sent an e-mail yesterday and today I recieved an e-mail from the server saying a virus was found on that message and that the email was intercepted and the message was stopped from reaching it's destination.

They say the virus report was: Worm.Bagle.E

I have to signs of that virus on my computer, I also runed Stinger from Mcaffe and it didn't found anything...

I have tried already to uninstall everything from OP and Norton and used jv16 power tools to remove the information from the registry and installed again afterwards but it didn't work...

    I'm running Windows XP Pro + SP1

About the BSOD, there's no way I could not anything from it, only the usual stuff like "if you installed something... bla bla" nothing else, no error messages, no erros reported in any files, nothing...

I have been a user of Norton Antivirus for quite some time now and I've alwats liked it, it protects MSN, however I don't know if I ever got any virus or problems with it that norton took care.... Norton has deleted every mail so far I got with virus (not the e-mail itself but the virus was deleted) and my problems with virus are something that it doesn't happen much... so for me it has been a good antivirus and always worked, though I know when 2004 was first launched I read something bad about it, dunno what it was though....

So, what antivirus do you recommend as good as norton or even better if you say norton is not a good antivirus... What's best companion to outpost and a good antivirus too?

  • nope, the log file is always below 50mb...
