I recently rescued 2 small kittens. They are now about 9 months to 12 months old. I have 3 other cats (all fixed) and now the kittens are yowling all night long. I think they are in heat or something.
I had my adult female cat fixed when she was 2 and the surgery really took a toll on her. She literally hated me for almost 6 months and she was REALLY angry. She's getting better now.
My question is will it be easier on them now at this age? I really hate to put them thru it, but I think it might be for the best. I'm also concerned about them not playing as much after because I really enjoy watching them chase each other. Any advice?
They don't feel it. It's fine. And it will stop their discomfort and your annoyance at their yowling and other undesirable behaviors. I have always had my cats and dogs fixed and they have never had any adverse effects. Maybe your other cat is just a witch anyway. My calico is naturally a domineering, hating all other animals, and barely tolerating me (but loving my bf) kind of girl.
As long as you play with them and help keep them active, they will be.
I have 4 older cats. 10, 7, 2, and 2.
The 10yr old chases the two 2yr olds around a lot. It's funny to watch.
It is a lot easier on them when they're young. All of mine are fixed and are just fine. They probably are in heat.
It's also a lot healthier, having them spayed helps prevent all sorts of cancers and infections. :)
Yes. Spaying will not only prevent unwanted kittens just in case she escapes, it will also prevent mammary gland cancer. In addition you will not have males trying to entice them to the outdoors by spraying on your doors and screens, hopefully. It is unusual that a cat has a difficult time recovering from this surgery. They should be fine. It will not slow them down, only age will do that.
definately... leads to healthier, longer lives...surgery has improved a bit now..and is definately easier on younger cats.. they bounce back faster...no worries, they'll still play.. mine are older... but you get a crackle ball, those furry mice or something attached to a string and they're kittens all over again! sometimes you just gotta engage them to get them playing again...
You should spay any animal if you are not a breeder. There are far too many unwanted and abandoned pets as a result of careless owners who fail to act responsibly.
Yes spay, or they'll escape or a stray cat will intrude and you'll end up with an unwanted litter. Plus, cats go into heat every 30 days, sometimes staying in what seems static heat, and yowling and rolling around, fighting and having PMS moods endlessly.
Most cats only slow down for a few days after a spay, and are better than ever by a week after. Their personalities usually improve.
Yes, you should. Them being in constant heat (which is what will happen if they continue to not be impregnated during their cycles) will cause any number of other medical problems, weight loss, fever, hair loss and in addition to all of these things, my little girl also developed feline acne.
Since she's been fixed (it's almost 3 weeks now) her weight has come back up to normal, her fever is gone, the hair is growing back on her ears and her acne has cleared up. And she's more loving and playful than she has ever been. She even still talks up a little storm. And her risk for various female cancers has been drastically reduced and even eliminated all together for some (ovarian, uterine, etc.)
Chase is 2 1/2 and has had no side effects or any complications from her surgery. Her incision healed up completely in about 2 weeks. We used a free spay service that operates throughout LA county. They did a wonderful job with her and we were able to not only pick her up the same day but only after 3 hours. She didn't need a cone or anything because her stitches were on the inside and they used surgical glue on the outer layer.
While every cat responds differently, I think due to the young age of your little ones, they should bounce back very quickly.
Good Luck.
you should because it leads to a longer life in cats and dogs on that note also it will help if you eventually let them outside sooo... it would be a really good idea to get them spayed/neutered
yes, u should. :-) happy holidays.
Yes, even indoor kitties should be fixed. They can lead much longer and healthier lives. I have a cat who was spayed in April of last year, and a kitten who was neutered in August of this year, and they both recovered very well and very fast from the operation. I think it's random. Neither one of them hated me for it either. My female was 8 months old when she was spayed and my male was 5 months old when he was neutered. They also say the sooner you do this, the better.
Cats rebound better and faster from a spay when they are younger. It is important for you to have them spayed even if they are indoor only. A cat in heat is a very good escape artist!
Believe me, it won't take long for them to be back to their frisky selves after their surgeries.
when i had my middle cat spayed at about six months i had to confne her to a closet because she was so active the next day (jumping high, etc.) that i was afraid she would tear her stitches (the vet told me not to let her jump or play too much but how do you stop that?) My youngest cat was spayed when i adopted her at eight weeks and she was about the most mischievous and active (and annoying cat) i've had (i couldn't wait for her to grow up and mellow out. They are spaying cats at quite an early age now (often as soon as they are weaned) and the sooner you have it done the better, really (health and other-wise, I've also had cats go into heat at six months). All of my cats are spayed and all are still quite playful (including my 14-year-old)
if the yowling is due to them being in heat (and they are old enough, ive seen it happen as young as 5/6 months)if you get them fixed theyll stop yowlling and be more affectionate towards you and the other cats
