  • she is 3yrs. old, has had one litter and is fixed. she had been eyeing the outdoors and i know she misses it. But we lost two cats in our neighborhood during Halloween last year and we suspect abuse. And on father's day another beloved cat was hit by a car. so I had enough and bought a cat climbing gym and even opened up the attic so she can go exploring up there. But she ran away last nite. for south texas it's pretty cold right now and we havent seen her since last night! what are the chances of her coming home?

I guess I just need comfort. my 11yr old daughter loves her Tinkerbell!

  • I have a cat that leaves the house to go hunting once in a while. She always returns in about 3 or 4 days unharmed. House cats are related to tigers, lions, panthers, and leopards, which are all predators. Hunting is their natural instinct. If it was a male cat it would return in about 5 or 6 days since they're less attached to the litter, but females are more than likely to come home sooner if they have a litter that is below the juvenile phase (the period between the socialization phase and sexual maturity).

  • Cats are remarkably resourceful. I'm in New York where it's much colder and there are plenty of cats that roam around all winter and do just fine. I know your cat is used to being home, but my point is they are very good and instinctive about what it takes to survive.

Keep an eye out for her, let your neighbors know that she's missing and it's not impossible she'll come home once she realizes what she's missing.Clearly she has a loving, comfortable home. Good luck.

  • One night our cat ran off, so we left the garage door open and put a cat bed in there and a dish of cat food. He turned up the next day.

If your cat doesn't come back after a couple days, you should put up Missing Cat signs. If you don't get your cat back after a week or two, the chances she'll ever come back are not good.

  • Cats are much safer indoors, i keep my three inside for that reason (well mostly for that reason) and they have all been raised as indoor only cats but my younger two still like to run out the door when they can get away with it. They always have found their way back--even though they aren't used to being outside. Cats have a great sense of where they come from and often find their way back home, i would be sure to contact all the shelters though because someone might have found her and turn her in (and you should go in person if possible).

  • that depends on her... i had a cat that would shoot out the door, do his "wild cat" thing... then he would come and sit on the porch and yowl until someone let him in.. then one day, he took off and never returned...nobody knows why... if she's been out and about before, i wouldnt worry too much.. she'll most likely come home soon for her people.. but one thing you can do that might bring her back sooner (and possibly the strays of the neighborhood) is to set out a bowl of food, or open a can outside and leave it there (only effective if she'd recognize the sound) also, when you're leaving and returning to your home, try calling to her.. she may be closer than you think and just waiting to hear your voice so she knows you're home...also, fliers and letting your neighbors and local shelters know she is out and about can help...dont worry too much about the cold...she can and will survive..or come home and cry to let ya know she's there and she's cold.. i live in Wisconsin, and our strays survive through our winters...
p.s. WHEN she comes home.. i'd microchip her... that way if it happens again she's easily identified.. collars can fall off or get a kitty stuck somewhere..best of luck, happy holidays

  • depending on how much she likes her habitat back at your house will determine if she's going to come home or if she will find a new home in the outside-ness

  • A cat will always return, you don't have to worry about that. When he starts to be hungry or thirsty, he'll come back.

  • I agree with Laurie and would add that the chances of her returning are pretty good. Since she's been outdoors before, I'm sure she acquired "street smarts". That will go a long way toward keeping her safer out there. I'm sure she'll be back soon.

  • If she's been in and out before, there's a good chance that she knows her way back and will make her way back to you in her own time if she can.

However, if this one never has been outside, you need to help her find her way home. I have heard that you can put an item of worn but not washed clothing outside your door in a comfy area, where a cat might like to sleep, and that your kitty will smell it, be comforted, and realize that this is the right house...

I hope you find her! and when you do, give her a safety cat collar, just to be safe in case she ever bolts again. It is very helpful to have ID on a missing kitty. (my indoor kitties always have theirs on, just in case).

    Good luck!

  • If you have pictures of your cat, post flyers of the cat everywhere. Also see if neighbors will help you look for the cat daily, and check with your local humane society on a daily basis.

  • i'm sure if ur cat gets that cold she'll return quickly. i live up in conn. and my cat can doesn't usually get bothered by the cold that easily...although he is kinda chunky. i commend u for trying to make ur cat an indoor cat. that must be really hard, i don't think i could do it, i hate when my cat cries, its so sad. i hope ur cat gets back safely! good luck

  • Hopefully she will be waiting at your doorstep by morning. Open a can of food, with a can opener near the door and start calling her tonight and in the morning. Place a small amount of food on the porch. My cat is also an escape artist and has tried a few times tonight to get out. She used to be an indoor/ outdoor cat before I got her and even after a few years she wants outside. I will win! Best wishes for the return of your cat.

  • I am so sorry to hear of your losses - I truly know what it feels like to lose a cat this way. One of my cats was stolen out of my yard last year and another bolted out of the house and got hit by a car right in front of me. I don't even take my cats outside on a harness anymore.
What you'll want to do is knock on neighbors doors and go out and search for her yourself. Typically when cats run away they get scared. A lot of the time they rely on you to come and find them. In the mean time, post fliers in your neighborhood, call vet clinics in the area (give them a description of your cat, when and where you last saw them, etc... that way they are on the lookout if someone brings a cat in.) You can also post missing cat ads on Craigslist.org and Petfinder.com - this service is totally free.
Call any humane societies in your area and file a missing pet report. Call animal control and file a missing pet report with them as well. Cats can travel up to a mile in a day - so you may want to stop into your local humane society and acquire a list of shelters/humane societies in neighboring cities/counties that you can file reports with as well.
Set your cat's litter box near your house and some of their toys/blanket. If you set out some food - you may attract unwanted visitors like raccoons etc..

Just be on the lookout and don't give up! There are stories of pets coming back home days/weeks/months after they went missing.

I wish you the very best of luck. Remember, don't give up!
