Having to return, Persephone sits on her mother's land
among the long grasses and buttercups, opening
her shirt to warm her flesh for winter,
for the head of Hades and his beautiful mouth.
She knows it is best to be in hell without anyone
knowing how she earned her place. Best to be
gossiped about when there is no truth to the gossip.
Only something worse no one would imagine.
In the ordinary world, the river rushes away from her.
She rests in her single bed dreaming of dark-blue steeds,
Listening to the croaking of crows. In the next room,
Demeter lies without dreams in her artificial sleep.
This poem is so confusing.
What is the main idea of this poem?
How does the main idea of this poem offer insight to the myth of Demeter and Persephone?
According to the myth Persephone was abducted by Hades and eventually Hades was forced to return her to her mother. However he tricked her into swallowing pomegranate seeds which ensured she would return to him in Hades for three months a year. This poem turns the myth on its head suggesting that Persephone wasn't unwillingly abducted. She wanted to be with Hades. She warms"her flesh for winter [these are the months she spends in Hades], for the head of Hades and his beautiful mouth." Also "dreaming of dark-blue steeds" refers to the roaring sound of the galloping steeds when Hades came to abduct her. So when the poem says she didn't swallow the pomegranate seeds, but just pretended, it is saying that she isn't being forced to return to Hades, she wants to go there, but she is letting everyone believe she is being forced. She is choosing this secret passion over the sterile existence with her mother ( who has no dreams or passion).
To me she longed to be in another place.
Her relationship was not real and she sought to leave as she was unhappy;.
