Jury Duty

  • My wife just recieved a notice for Jury Duty (second communication - the real one with a MUST APPEAR)... and we have a short Japan trip planned during the time she must appear. Assuming the court will not change dates (and where we live it's a high possiblity - they are really clamping down), and we are willing to change our tickets by one week (same travel days, just one week later) and AA has MANY seats on the proposed flights - any thoughts on what the AA policy might be? Many thanks in advance.

Glad to see that even after the 9/11 attack, some people feel necessary to lie to get out of their civic duty. Yes, your time is more valuable... God Bless America!

I realize that some people have valid reasons to get out of jury duty (i.e., self-employed), but for most people, your employer will typically pay you for jury duty, and you'll find it an educational experience -- learning about the legal system -- and have a chance to support our democracy.

  • The answer to your question depends on the kind of ticket, but you didn't say. Full fare, business or first class, or awards - no problem. If they're discount "non-changeable" tickets, and you offer to fax them the jury duty notice, they might be lenient, especially since you're EXP.

As for bonzaiflyer's suggestion: I'm told that "I don't believe the police waste their time arresting innocent people" is just as effective and a bit more credible.

  • Once again thank you everyone.....the problem was resolved thanks to AA and the ANGEL who I was lucky enough to answer the phone - and who is now 'stuck' with me for years to come! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

  • I was taking a trip to Houston on one weekend and got call to Jury Duty. I didn't try to get out and glad I didn't because it was very educational. I went the first day and was picked for another day to come back. Came back but were not picked for the Jury Panel because I didn't agree with neither the prosecutor nor the defense. I I do believe that Jury duty is a privilege not an obligation so please be proud to serve. By the way, I was flying with American Airlines and they were understandable about Jury Duty. And I didn't get pay but the whole $12 I was there for 2 days. I donated that money.

  • thank you everyone for the wide range of responses...... her plan is to go to Jury Duty (although she often believes the police would arrest you unless you were guilty - we balance each other http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ) I'm trying to find out if anyone has had personal experience with AA in changing dates (we can fax them the jury duty demand). BTW - I think in Los Angeles where we are, it's $5.00 a day, which may explain the outcome of some of our cases.

  • Don't know if this is relevant, but we just changed the dates on our ff tickets last night from October to April. There was no fee as long as we kept the same destination.

  • I had a similar situation. Wrote a polite letter to the court explaining the situation and asking that I be excused for the planned vacation period. I offered to serve at any other time during the coming six months. Also said that if they could not excuse me, I would understand and would be glad to comply with the court's needs. I was excused right away for the vacation week. It doesn't hurt to ask.

  • This might not be the politically correct thing to do, but I'm sure they would let you off if you sent in a letter in garbled English saying that you gone done don't speak so good english. The courts wouldn't dare offend someone and risk a discrimination lawsuit.

As for jury duty being a good use of time, I have to disagree. All you learn about the legal process is that most jurors have no idea what they're doing and don't really care. However, the whopping $30 they pay for the day of your time might make it worthwhile.

  • In Houston, it is very easy to "reschedule" jury duty. You can even do it over the telephone with an automated system. Don't know about elsewhere.

  • If I were clairvoyant, I would say that the ANGEL in question is aka The Goddess of the American Board. She is very well known and loved here. I do not mention her name for reasons that are also known to all here.

All I can add Sir, is that I cannot think of anyone at American Airlines who could or would look after you better. I am totally prejudiced as I fell under her spell in January this year, and she is welcome in my country and my home at any time. Quite simply put , she is one of the great things that happened to my and my partner's life in 2001.

To the Lady in question, you may be "gone" but you are far from forgotten.

  • Very nice thoughts Paul - I am indeed a lucky! The spell has been cast http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

  • Tell them you believe in the death penalty no matter what the offense, and the defense attorney will send you packing very quickly.

  • You can always call the court and say that you cannot make it to the jury. I have done it before when they tried to summon me for jury duty during of all times my vacation!

  • Homer Simpson, on getting out of jury duty:

"The secret is to tell them you're prejudiced against all races...."

  • Gees, I love the responses from some of the people on here on how to get out of jury duty. Fine examples of doing your civic duty. I am a self-employeed trader who stands to lose a lot of money when I am called (4 times in the last 10 years), but always manage to get to court at my appointed day and time. The last time I was called, however, was when I had an international trip planned long before the summons. I called the court clerk, expained my situation, and she put me back into the jury pool - plain and simple.
And wow, $30 a day? Here in Chicago/Cook County, we get a whopping $12.50 for our participation. But it is an obligation that every citizen should not take lightly. I am sure that the airlines would be accomodating in this type of situation, given the fact that you have a receipt from the court to prove your attendance. Do not know official policy, however.
