I had an idea but wanted some feed back from teachers. I have created a website called Backyard Ecology Journal (http://backyardecology.wordpress.com) where I hope for students and amateur ecologists to submit short essays and expiremental/observational research papers.
The goal of the site is to provide students with the opportunity to disseminate their work online, to the world. I do not expect Nature quality papers, but I do hope for parents and teachers to encourage the writing and submitting of essays and papers. Turkish Respiratory Journal:: Turkish Respiratory Journal. August 2002, Volume 3, Number 2, Page(s) 043-047 Attitudes of the High School Teachers and Students Towards Smoking: Two http://www.turkishrespiratoryjournal.com/summary.php3?id=201HOME |
On top of this, I hope that amateur scientists can share their work through papers and essays, encouraging students, as well as act as reviewers for papers.
Before I begin really publicizing the site, I would like input from teachers as to whether or not this is a good idea, or if it would even work.
I think it's a great idea. I'm a science teacher and Web developer on the side and could offer feedback on both the idea and the site itself if you like. There are also ways you can promote the site through search engine optimization and word of mouth. If you let me know how much work you're comfortable doing, I can offer some more specific feedback.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to get this moving forward.
For the site, I was planning to use wordpress.com as the content manager (http://backyardecology.wordpress.com). At first I am expecting to do a lot of work, but as people become involved, I hope to relinquish most of the work to people who want to be editors. I still need to write a 'Guideline for Authors' page.
Also, I will take any suggestions and assistance getting this idea out to more teachers. If you would like to put some effort into this, that would be great.
I'm a bit busy developing sites (and moving to a new house :) ) right now, but I can offer some pointers.
Download a program called Good Keywords (http://www.goodkeywords.com/). Its Keyword Suggestion tool lets you see what search phrases people are using on Overture (which is essentially Yahoo) and how many searches were conducted for each phrases over the past month. Based on those numbers and some common sense, you can choose a keyword phrase to optimize your site.
For example, let's say hypothetically that you choose "ecology journal." I haven't done any research myself, and you'll probably choose a different phrase, but we can pretend for now. To optimize for search engines, make sure to include the phrase on your home page in this way:
Once in the title of your page
Once in a heading ()
Once in a link
A couple of times in the text of your home page
Other than that, write for the human user who will be visiting your site.
It usually takes a few months to be ranked in search engines, but if you start now, you'll get a lot more traffic later.
If you have extra time after briging your site to near completion, submit your site to the three biggest directories:
DMOZ (http://dmoz.org/)
Yahoo (http://dir.yahoo.com/)
Zeal (http://www.zeal.com/)
It can be a bit of trouble to submit to Zeal, since you'll have to sign up for an account first.
If you start getting into the blogging community and posting comments on other people's related blogs, you'll also eventually get a lot of traffic by word of mouth if you have a really good site.
Have fun with it! :)
Update on Zeal: Their directory no longer exists. Yahoo! and DMOZ are the directories to submit to now.
