I know Amylase is an enzyme found in saliva, so would amylase work best in acidic, neutral, or alkali conditions? Thanks!!
Saliva is not acidic, it is alkaline in nature. Everyday Health Guide: 365 Tips for Healthy Living:: diagnosis or disease treatment in the medical sense. They form Hipbath is given in cold, hot, neutral. or alternate temperatures. IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS: http://www.free-ebooks.net/files/727365_Health_Tips_Ebook.pdfHOME |
Ya stomach is acidic but it doesn't burn our stomach because of the gastric juices. Stomach also releases gastric juices which helps the food in digestion.
i should think neutral, if it was acidic it would burn your tongue?
The saliva contains mucin to lubricate food, antibacterial agents, salivary amylase that hydrolyse starch and buffers that neutralise the acid produced by bacteria in the mouth cavity. The buffers in the saliva are alkaline in nature to neutralise the acids, hence creating a neutral environment for the enzymes to work on. The salivary amylase work best in neutral to slighty alkaline condition, it will denature when the pH gets too low.
Saliva is slightly alkaline which aids in digestion(pH 7.5 http://www.ph-ion.com/index.asp?PageActi... (stomach is slightly acidic) Though amylase is slightly acidic(pH6.7)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amylase
