I have an iq of 133, is that good? What's the highest you can score?

  • There is no "maximum" in theory, but over 180 is extremely rare in reality. I think the highest I ever read about was somewhere around 230. Someone with 145 or higher is rare, and identified as a "genius."

Study statistics to get a clearer understanding of what the terms mean.

Think of a woman's wide brimmed gardening hat with the brim on a table. When you look at it in profile, it is flat to gently rising on the sides and like a hill or mound in the middle. That profile is called a bell curve or normal distribution. If you put a little dot on a paper for everyone whose I.Q. was a specific number, and you stack up the dots so that they make a solid line up the paper for each additional person with that number, you would make a graph that would look like the hat in profile. You would have very few stacked up in the column for 1,2, 3, 4, and a few more for 5, 6, 7, a few more still for 9.10....and on until you got to 33. Then you'd have steadily increasing numbers, like the slope of the brim of the hat until you got up to about 70. The numbers of people who have an IQ from 70 up to 85 would be much higher and steadily increasing. From 85 to 100, the number sort of tapers off, but you are up on the crown of the hat, with 100 in the middle, and the most people would be in the group of columns right around 100. The numbers of people in the columns from 101 to 115 would mirror the columns from 85 to 100. The numbers in the columns from 116 to 130 would mirror the numbers for 85 to 70. and then you would be back out onto the brim, out as far as it goes.

When you look at a normal distribution, the bulk of people are in the crown of the hat or the body of the bell (That's why it is called a bell curve) shape.

66% of all people are between 85 and 115. That is considered "normal." People between 70 and 85 are limited, and people between 115 and 130 are "bright." About 15% of all people are in one of these two groups. The remainder, about 15% of all people, are below 70 or above 130, with the numbers getting more and more rare as people are father and farther from 100.

You are brighter than average by just over one standard deviation.

Something I know to be true about IQ numbers, though, is that the important part is not the gift, but the use to which the gift is put. I had students who were approaching 80 who worked harder and more conscientiously than some of my kids who were easy 115's. They achieved more, and they were more pleasant people. IQ isn't "just a number," because it is a measure of how quickly you learn. It is not a measure of what you learn, what use you put that learning to, or what wisdom you gain from your experience, but simply how quickly or easily the information comes to you.

So yes, 133 is good. You can probably master what ever subject you take on, but you will still have to work to learn things. Being bright is no excuse for not continuing to work and learn and grow. Put your gifts to honorable uses.

  • There are different scales, but on the one this likely is from, it is usually seen as gifted intellectually but not a genius. Any score over 200 is considered unreliable as to exactly where the person falls by those who believe in IQ tests. The thing to remember is that although the experts claim they are accurate, IQ tests are still going to be affected by the opportunities to learn one has had, and that some people accomplish far more with supposedly average IQ's than those with higher ones. In other words, what you do with what you've got is really what's important.

  • An IQ of 133 is respectable. Most IQ tests are normed on a bell curve, meaning that the mean is 100 and the ranges are calculated based on standard deviation from the mean - the area +/- 1 SD from the mean is average, the area +/- 2 SD from the mean is above/below average, so on and so forth.

Keep in mind, though, that IQ tests are suspect. As mentioned before, environment and experience influence the result, and many IQ tests are very culturally biased. As a measure of "intelligence," an IQ is a very narrow estimate and, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't mean all that much. Good assessments are designed to take into account the multifaceted aspects of a person's experience, culture, and abilities.

  • For a Stanford-Binet IQ test, 133 would be about 2 standard deviations (sigma) above average. That's pretty high, enough for careers like engineering and sciences, journalism, law, etc.. The upper IQ limit depends on the test, but I've seen numbers just over 200.
