If you send an atom back in time...?

  • If a piece of matter even as small as an atom (call it atom A) is sent back in time superluminally or which ever method, would that create a completely alternate universe?

Considering the new past contains atom A which existed but now there is a duplicate, wouldnt that change the universe just as significantly as if a human was sent back and made an alteration to the past?

Being that at the exact same times one universe (past) had a single atom A, and at the same time the same universe (new past) has 2 atom As

What would happen to the current future in conflict with new future affected by the altered past? As a scientist who just pushed the button to send the atom, what would you expect to happen to you?

Sorry if this is elementary, I dont study relativity at all.

  • Well it would likely lead to a pretty messy paradox, depending on whether you consider it to travel to another 'universe' or just back in it's own time. Either way, things get weird.

Of course, this can't happen according to special relativity in the first place, thats why it leads to paradoxes.
It would be no different to ask what would happen if the entire universe disappeared tomorrow, but Earth was left untouched. It leads to all sorts of weird paradoxes and inconsistencies, simply because it requires breaking current physical theories.

  • Technically, yes, there would indeed be a creation of another universe. Some scientists say that there are infinite universes, part due to the choices that are made. This is a topic that is still being DEEPLY debated among scientists, so there is no correct answer, this is one of them, the one that I happen to believe in!

  • I think that if the atom made it's way back to the past, then it would then come from the future, so it would be that it was two instants of itself in the same time frame but it would be that it would not be in the future. If the state of the future pended on the atom, it would not effect the stream from changing. When the past catches up to the future where the atom was from, it would stream into the future as it would when it was in the future. However, the future would have streamed further into the future and so it must be that it makes it's effect in the stream currents where it streams. In where the future is coalescing from track.
