suppose the sun does not turn into a red giant and fry us all, but instead, just disappeared. Also imagine that we know this it going to happen in about 20 years.
mankind would not go down without a fight, and so the means to create artificial light would be needed, and people would need to be protected from the cold.
nuclear power has already been achieved, and so that is one of the energy sources we can keep when the sun is gone. however people can no longer create solar power, and the atmosphere has either turned into a freezing cloud, or vanished.
we would have to live underground, plus the earths core, will provide and endless amount of heat due to the earths pressure.
plants and life stock can be brought with us deep under ground, kept alive by artificial sunlight (or UV rays).
my question is, would mankind survive if given the chance to prepare, and live in a rock floating in space?
Everything would die without the sun. If the atmosphere vanished as well, it would be a very quick extinction.
hmm..interesting thinking, but someone would have to convince people to study that..
I dont quite know what you mean by "artificial light", but i dont think it would be feasible. Even living under ground with is an issue by its self. Certain cells of you body need sunlight to reenerate and create chemical reaction. With out them, you could be in trouble. Also it would probably be near if not impossible to get everyone underground because the earth would go into a deep freeze fast. Also for habitable temperatures to support a human would require drilling into the ground about a mile. Odd are that without this type of life would end ours quickly. Although mankind would end, there are some extremophiles may still survive. I Love You! : Love SMS | Love SMS:: Welcome to WWW.LoveSMS.Co.In. Sun 2 Dec 2007. I suppose it's possible that a handful of people could survive for a limited amount of time in some sort of bunker/biosphere, but I doubt it would last long.
I don't have enough of a science background to say exactly what would go wrong, but I'm guessing that even the heat from the earth's core couldn't make up for the lack of warmth from the sun. Earth would become a cold, lifeless rock.
Fortunately for us, we have millennia to develop space travel before we face our sun dying out on us.
No we would not survive,we would need an ecosystem, and that cannot be made by man. 2008 Easter event - The RuneScape Wiki - The RuneScape fansite that :: The 2008 Easter event started on 18 March 2008 and ended on 31 March 2008. if the sun dessapear so will all life on earth, the cold temperatuure would be devastating no joke dude.
all life would go "poop" and we would freeze like a lake in a 100 sq meter freezer!
even if the leading officials of the world knew this was going to happen they would not tell us... they might prepare for themselves but it would cost too much to prepare for the entire earths population they would think of it as a means of population control most likely. Not to mention gravitational pull of the sun who knows we may get sucked into a black hole or collide with other planets or something..
Doomed! Doomed, I say!
I always enjoy questions like this and 'What if the Moon disappeared?' Makes you wonder what the motivation was to ask such a question.
"Zo," tugging on goatee, while tapping notebook with pen. "Do you often have zis fantasy about things disappearing? Tell me about your mother."
Wouldn't you get a similar response by just asking... Could Man survive beneath the surface of the Earth without solar power?
We would all freeze to death in a millisecond! Become ice dust! But don't worry you would'nt feel a thing!
A S SUN IS THE SOURCE OF ENERGY IF THE SUN DIS APPEARS SUDDENLY THE WHORLD WILL PERISH.
Man would find away to regenerate what usages we do have. But as far as right now goes many would not survive.
not in 20 years and not if the sun were gone . the suns gravity is what keeps the earth revolving around it and without the sun there might not be any tectonic movement to maintain heat at the core and the temperature of atmosphere less space is near absolute zero. better go back and redesign your parameters.oh and p.s. the earth without the sun would wander aimlessly until captured by another gravity strong enough to hold it in place. like maybe Jupiter.
are u kidding?
I'm sure they would survive, but, like, it wouldn't change our lives that much, it would just be as if it was night all the time. As for the plants we would need a lot of lights, we need to take care of trees and flowers even more than we have to now. OMG, MAYBE WE WOULD DIE. Without the sun we can't see what's going on in space! OMG! I'm guessing a lot of people will just kill themselves when the sun dissapeares. BTW, a lot of people won't believe that the sun would dissapear, you know people, they're idiots. If the sun dissapeared, the only way we could survive is if all countries could just stop fighting for a while so we can find a way to survive. There is so much we would need to do to survive if that happens.
Yes. A small portion of mankind could, for all practical purposes, survive indefinitely. But it wouldn't be a whole lot of fun. About as interesting as living on the moon or one of the icy moons of the gas giants.
We would die with in 2-3 weeks probably because of the speed it would take for the heat to run out. But i suppose mankind would live off the small amount of artificial light and heat they had and come up with ways to protect themselves from the vast heat change. It would be quite interesting as well to see if mankind's body could adapt to this change.
I certainly hope so.
Since we havent already learned how to live on the moon, we're doomed.
We'd freeze like popsicles. Life would end. There would be no more fun with bearded clams.
