I have found a wonderful site that offers live praying mantis insects. I have bought three for my classroom and I plan to use them as a way to show incomplete metamorphosis in my classroom. I wanted to share the link since it was so hard to find the mantises on search engines. I received mine today, they included free containers and the mantises are so cute! http://www.livemantis.com Which Bugs Are Good Bugs? When I was teaching Entomology, I always got live insects from Carolina Biological Supply House. Their prices are reasonable and their shipping is good, fast, and safe. I was teaching in Alaska and rarely (I think maybe once) had to have a replacement order sent because of death during shipping.

I have viewed some of the sites you have posted here, I see that the livemantis site claims there are mantises which might not meet regulations under some federal law, so there might well be some that dont seem to be allowed in the United States !:( The 3 sites you list seem to offer some that are not from the U.S. but would most likely not survive a single frost, the eggs would just die right then if they are from the rain forest or where-ever, so I do not see why there iwould be such a law, but that also ok with me since I have no interest in mantises, just doing a school paper.. So it does seem that it may be illegal to have non U.S. mantids in the U.S. except to the chinese ones and the ones from europe from what I have learned. I must find more information on mantids, like, do they hear, how do they hear and such, if anyone knows that, please post a reply.. essay: thumb-splitters and:: The photo above, as most of you know, is of an insect called a praying mantis. very secretive and found on muddy bottoms where they form complex burrows http://web.mac.com/biomescenter/Biomescenter.com_annex/essay:_thumb-splitters_and.htmlHOME |

There is one in every crowd and it looks to be YOU! Sarah ( the owner of http://www.livemantis.com is a very nice person, go pick on someone else, I bet you kick your dog daily!!
WOW! I did not know there are so many different species of praying mantis insects! I bought two "Bark Mantis" and two "Color Changing Mantis" at http://www.livemantis.com. It is illegal to own, breed, sale, possess an Orchid Manits (Ghost Mantis, Violin Manits, Flower Mantis, other non native invasives) in the United States! If you are in doubt contact USDA/APHIS which is a Federal Government Agency, the head of which can be contacted via the site and he will personally inform you that all mantids EXCEPT U.S. Native mantids, Chinese and European (M religiosa) are illegal in the United States! The tropical and other non native invasives carry pathogens to which our U.S. Native Trees are not immune! So who ever is telling you that Orchid Mantids are not illegal in the U.S. is most likely selling them! There are 20 U.S. Native speices and 2 introduced mantids allowed in the United States according to APHIS a U.S. Federal Agency

is there a place to get a live adult US praying mantis?
They often offer them full grown at http://statequarters.20m.com/prayingmantis.html If you buy mantids make sure you purchase from a seller located in the U.S. and that the mantids are LEGAL U.S. Mantids. Most sites sell mantids that are illegal in the United States under Federal Law. I learned this from Sarah at the site link above. I bought 4 Color Changing Mantids from her and now I have a second gerneration since Sarahs mantis care guide taught me how to properly care for them. She sent two males and two females. I lost one male to mismolt early on, but the other three lived. The male mated with both females and they did not chew off his head during mating! I now have 3 mantis eggs that have hatched and 3 that are incubating. After 8 months, my females are still alive and making eggs! The male died about 2 weeks after he mated the females. Only rasie mantids if you plan to take the time to care for them properly, it is easy, but you have to make sure to follow the instructions! Buy legal U.S. Mantids at http://statequarters.20m.com/prayingmantis.html
