  • it depends on the vet... i feel my old vet was a con-artist and made me pay way too much for looking at ferret poop. so i stopped going, plus she wanted to start pumping steroids into my ferret and i wasn't havin that so i told her to go f*@# off... and i found a new (cheaper, saner) vet...

  • I agree with Kit. I have alot of experience with dogs so some things that annoy me about vets is that they will give advice on training & nutrition and honestly very few vets know much about either. I know a few vets who think Beniful is a great dog food, and of course we've all seen most clinics selling Science Diet which ain't bad but certainly isn't great either. And often times they will tell people a dog should be put down or is beyond help with training, even tho any trainer with half a brain would know otherwise and could fix the problem. Another thing that gets me about vets is that they don't know their breeds very well and many will also discriminate. I always thought it was just me when vets would treat my chows like dirt and one vet even suggested PTS my 8 wk old puppies because of their breed, even tho I am an experienced chow owner. I've had vets wrap my chows muzzles so tight despite the dog showing no aggressive behavior the dogs muzzle would swell tremendously (like the vet who put on a nylon muzzle, then put one of those rubber tourniquet stips, then used the wire muzzle I brought over that. He was furious when he left the room for 5 min. and I had enough and removed it) Eventually after joining chow yahoo groups I learned I was not alone in this type of treatment.

Also, I resent that like most doctors....vets make alot of unnecessary mistake such as when my friends German Shepherd went in to be neutered, and the dog was kept overnight for observation. Ironically, the clinic had no one on duty overnight (then why keep a dog for "observation"?) and the dog bled to death.

Like any profession, there are good and bad vets, there are nice, kind, rude and downright mean vets. I have a female vet which was VERY kind when it came time to put down the chow in my icon picture, I don't think I could have gotten thru that difficult time without her, she was kind but firm. When I fell apart when she entered the room, she was kind about, when I suggest I stay and be there for my dog she was firm about me leaving the room, and looking back as much as I wanted to be there for my dog I know as hard as it was to sit in the parking lot....had I been in the room they probably would've had to call 911 for me, I absolutely came apart. She was also one of the few vets my chow gravitated to right away, so even tho I couldn't be there for him I knew he was with the best possible person other then me.

I still use her as my vet now for my German Shepherd and Newfie mix, I wouldn't go to anyone else.

So like Kit, some vets I really think the world of...others I would not take a pet rock to.

  • I perceive a veterinarian just as important as a doctor of people. He has the education and he takes care of pets, which some people consider to be family
