I have never gotten one. I laugh to myself to picture all the 20 something girls of today filled with tattoos in their 70's with their skin sagging and their grandkids asking what that spot is.
You want to see their book. You can ask about sterilization but most states are regulated. That's another thing, you want to go to a shop. Your brother's friend who just got out of lockup is not your best bet for a tattoo artist no matter how good he draws.
look at the instruments are they clean,
look at pictures look at their designs they have done!!!

yes ask him to see his complete portfolio and if it is kinda small or empty then walk away also ask how long he has been tattooingand who he apprenticed under and where
first off, wait until you're old enough if you aren't already. Then, make sure he'she is clean. You can visit the place and just watch them do a couple of tatoos. Ask about aftercare, and prevention of infection. I'm 16 and i got one, but the guy who did it, messed it up. So also be sure they're a good artist. First try to get a recommendation from someone you know and make sure the place is clean. If you are in an urban area it will be easier to find a good artist.
Ask to see their last health department inspection paper. If it over a year old.... use much caution. You wouldn't eat in a dirty restaraunt... don't get ink in a dirty place. Talk to the artist that will be doing your ink.... make sure you like them and that they understand what you want and that it can be done. Ask what their after care instrustions are. And most importantly trust your gut.
Be sure to ask the technique used to sterilize the equipment.Autoclaves are the best, also be sure to ask if a new needle is used for each client, if not buy your OWN. No matter what make sure your needle is new and yours. If the artist is not using gloves for every client JET!!! Artistic talent alone does not make a good tatoo artist.
Instead of asking your artist alot of questions, I recommend just looking around the tattoo studio. Does it look clean? (most tattoo places are umm well somewhat scary looking, weird pictures on the walls or scluptures and sometimes scary looking people lol..but what you want to look for is a dirty floor, overflowing trash can, just any kind of mess) Make sure he wears gloves at all times, make sure the piercing needle came from inside a sealed package (they will usually open the package right in front of you)...umm that's about all i can think of for now, OH and make sure he asks for your ID to make sure that you are 18 or older. If he doesn't ask for any kind of ID then he is breaking the law, and if he's breaking the law he probably doesn't care about proper safety procedures. Also, if you're under 18 and he's willing to give you a tattoo anyway, that's a bad sign because that is illegal too.
Getting a tattoo doesn't hurt too bad so don't worry about it..but I would advise you to eat a little something beforehand. If you don't there is a possibilty that you will pass out
ask to see some of their work and if you don't like it don't let them do yours
the first thing you'll need to do is research artists in your area on your own time. look at work they have done and make sure that they are competent. the worst thing you can do is to just walk into a tattoo shop and get a tattoo from whatever artist is available. there are plenty of good artists out there but there are plenty more horrible ones.
honestly if you do your research there aren't all that many questions i can think of to ask. educate yourself and you'll be good to go.
