If i'm nt mistaken, R&B is Rap&Blues right? And blues is slow music right? PLEASE Explain!

  • Yep..they're all junk...but can't say I've ever thought of shoving knives in my ears! lol

  • rap is mostly rhyming with no real sound effects
hip hop is rap with a music in the back round
im not so sure what gangtsa rap is
R&B aka rythme and blues is like ne-yo

  • No, R& B means rythym and blues. Blues does not have to be slow, it's more about the instruments and how they are played and the lyrical content that determine that. For instance, if someone is playing a steel guitar with a bottle slide and talking about being in prison or losing thier girlfriend, or any kind of problems, then chances are it's blues.

  • Man, no wonder the rap industry is like this today. The fans don't know what's really good because just like the rappers, almost nobody has a real understanding of music.

HipHop/Rap is a genre of music that (like most music we listen to in America today) has its roots in Blues. I grouped hip hop and rap together because they are used interchangibly to identify this music. Hip hop is more than just music though, it's a lifestyle.

There are sub genres of Rap/Hip Hop, even more than you listed above.

Gansta rap is just like it sounds. It rapping about banging. There's no musical talent involved, no real lyrics either. They just rap about guns, killing, their sets, hoes and money they don't have. Young Jock is a current example of this.

Then there is what I'm gonna call Southern Rap. This covers 'crunk', and 'screwed music' all in one group. To me it's the same because you can't just put some bells and whistles on a 4 bar beat and think you created something new. So while I respect the music, it's still not original enough to be a seperate genre to me. this is the type of music that you hear in the club, and see on BET/MTV. The lyrics might be a little better than Gangsta Rap, but it's all about a catchy beat and a chorous, and looking good. People don't care if you have talent if you look good trying.

These two sub-genres of hip hop/rap comprise what is considered to be mainstream rap today. The record companies promote this type of rap because it fits a marketable formula for them, and of course because sex and drama sell. Unfortunately what most of the teenagers coming up don't realize is that what they think is good music today would have never gotten any play just 15-20 years ago. There is a recipe for most pop rap music. Pick your favorite sellout rapper, and apply this recipe and you'll see that it fits. It's a 5 step recipe:

    1. Make a very simply 4 bar beat and loop it up to play over and over for 5 minutes. You can use a computer so that you don't have to bother with little things like musical understanding, knowing how to play an instrument, and now they're even cutting out DJing.

    2. You come up with a catchy chorous/hook. It doesn't even have to make sense. All it has to do is "sound" cool. Example: "This is why I'm hot."

    3. Now you can write your lyrics, but they have to be dumbed down and MUST include the following: You have to talk about hoes, banging, and money you don't have. So what if most rappers never live the life that they're fronting to us. It's the image that sells, right?

    4. When you make a video go out and rent the most expensive stuff you can find. Again, it doesn't matter if all that stuff is going back to the rental place after the video shoot because you're only selling a look.

    5. Last but not least, you have to have naked women. What video is complete without groupies degrading themselves.

The last sub-genre of Hip Hop I left out is underground. I use the word underground to cover anything that's not mainstream. To me this is the best kind of pure Hip Hop that's still true to its roots. This includes battle rappers, as well as what's called "conscious rap". I don't like that word though. I think it was made up by people too dumb to understand it when someone raps about anything that's not mainstream. Common is a great example for this category. He considered conscious though because he doesn't only talk about that tired old 'on the block crap'. And I love that. There's a whole world out there past the corner, so why not talk about it?

And as someone else said, R&B is actually Rhythm and Blues, which is older than Hip Hop, and is slower, though just like rock, country and rap it also has its roots in blues music.

And I wonder if whoever game me a 'thumbs down' actually READ what I had to say.

  • Overall, Hip-Hop is the main genre for this culture of music. Rap, R&B, which is Rhythym and Blues, along with gangsta rap, which are all subgenres, come together to form one main entity.

R&B is done with real instruments and even some singing, not the manufactured beats that Rap has become accustomed to.

Gangsta Rap is on the hardcore end of rap, which is usually about gangs, drugs, killing, etc. It depicts or even glorifies this kind of abrasive lifestyle. This would be people like Young Jeezy, Lil' Wayne, Snoop Dogg, and The Game.

Then you have mainstream Rap, which would be people like Nelly, Jay-Z, T.I., Chingy, and I guess T-Pain.

I might have missed a few things but I hope that helps you.

  • Rap is a section of hip hop. Rapping is the speaking on the mic aspect of Hip Hop. Whenever you hear an ol'e school Hip Hop artist or an Emcee speak on the state of Hip Hop they are talking about how the game has been turned upside down. Guys like Young Geezy and Nelly are basic rappers. Basic rappers are part of the hip hop culture. But they haven't built there rapping skills up to become an Emcee. Guys like Andre 3000, Bun B, Mos Def, Common, Kanye West and Lil Wayne are Emcee's. These guys spend hours upon hours weekly perfecting there gift. I know anyone can hear the difference of basic rappers and Emcee's when they listen to Hip Hop music. This also applies to the music producers as well. The ones whose music has a greater more complex sound are considered Hip Hop royalty. Most people I know don't use the term "Gangsta Rap" I believe the media made this one up. The problem a lot of Hip Hoppers have is the fact that a lot of novice rappers are going platinum because they consciously make mainstream music. So people like me and others believe they are pimping the art to go platinum and most of the kids who buy it really are too young to know the difference between commercial rap and the deeper art form of Hip Hop. A great example is if a guy copied the great art form of Jazz. Learned how to play the saxophone good enough to get buy and made an album he knew would sell to people who like the sound of Jazz even though they don't truly understand the art.

This is a form of music that has been around since 1989 called Hip Hop Soul. Hip Hop Soul is when an soul artist sings about the same stuff rappers rap about over the same style music. Hip Hop Soul is a style of Soul music. Now 99% of great Soul artist will have at least one Hip Hop, New Classic, Soul Ballad and Slow Drag soul song on there album. So I guess I great example would be pitching. A great pitcher like Roger Clements has a fast ball, Curve ball, and a Change up. All three are considered pitches even though they all different in there delivery and movement. He will throw all 3 of these pitches in a game. The game is the album. Brian McNight is better at soul ballads, Mary J. Blige is better at Hip Hop Soul, R. Kelly is better at Slow Drag and Jill Scott is better at New Classic soul. All four artists can throw all 4 styles but they have mastered one better than the other styles. They throw different pitches better but all of these pitches are considered soul music. Honestly I'm too young to know were the term R&B came from. Soul music is what this style of music is called by the most people who perform it. Peace and luv.

  • in the order you put it:

bad, really bad, unbelieveably s hit and "listening to it makes me want to shove knives down my ears". thats the difference, quite simple
