PRAGUE, March 27 (Reuters) - The Czech Republic is testing a dead swan for the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the first suspected case in the central European country, the new EU member's chief veterinarian said on Monday.
The swan was found near the southern town of Hluboka nad Vltavou, on the Vltava river, head of the State Veterinary Authority Milan Malena told reporters.
Malena said veterinarians had established the swan had the H5 version of the virus and tests would show by Wednesday if it was the deadly H5N1 strain.
"I expect this to be the H5N1, highly pathogenic form," Malena said. "If the virus is confirmed, veterinary measures will be implemented."
Malena said that if tests in Prague confirm H5N1, samples would be sent to the European Union reference laboratory in Weybridge, Britain.
Neighbours Austria, Slovakia, and Germany have already confirmed cases of the virus.
The H5N1 strain, which has spread from Asia to the Middle East, Africa and Europe, remains essentially an animal disease but can infect people who come into contact with sick poultry.
Second bird flu case in Czech Rep, first much infectious virus

Prague- A second case of bird flu has been registered in the Czech Republic as tests have proved the presence of virus H5 in a dead swan that was found in Ceske Budejovice, south Bohemia, on Saturday, the Agriculture Ministry said today.
Meanwhile, tests conducted in the National Reference Laboratory in Prague in the first case, where bird flu killed a swan found near Hluboka nad Vltavou last week, have proved a most infectious form of virus H5.
The laboratory in Weybridge, Britain, is to check whether this is the H5N1 stem that is dangerous to man. The results are expected to arrive in the middle of next week, the ministry said.
Milan Malena, director of the State Veterinary Administration, said that the extraordinary veterinary measures introduced in south Bohemia earlier this week will not change, they will only be extended to further territory.
The two dead swans were only separated by three kilometres.
Actually I think the last two are numbers eight and nine (not ten).
I hope your gov will take measures now to avoid some evident problems that will arise down the road.
Thanks for the local info towards the poultries UKCZ, again I think this behavior we will find it here in North America soon.

Sounds like it was mis-reported.
UKCZ, I read outbreaks in Bohemia,
will this trigger a reaction towards the Gypsy minority ??

will this trigger a reaction towards the Gypsy minority ??Sadly you don't need anything to trigger a reaction towards the Roma. They are widely seen as feckless scroungers who would rob you in an instant here. This racism is mainstream.
The Czechs are quite stoical about it all, but I went to the center of Prague yesterday and, let me tell you, when the tram goes over the river most people are looking at the swans. Sales of poultry meat continue to be seriously affected too. I went to my local supermarket (we have loads of them nowadays) and the chicken was piled high in the fresh section and in the freezer. I saw nobody buying chicken while I was there, and I mean nobody! Chat Rooms at Paltalk | Live Online Chat Community:: RESULTS: 1 - 10 of 198 results for jeff beck found in Profiles. The real test will be when it gets to Prague and when a backyard chicken flock gets it. There's plenty of 'close contact' with birds here.
Shame they sent it Weybridge now we won't see the sequence data.

Prague - The Czech Republic's first case of bird flu was reported on Monday.
The CTK news agency reported that a swan tested positive for the disease which has been spreading in Europe among wild birds, forcing tough restrictions on poultry farms and cross-border trade.
Czech Agriculture Minister Jan Mladek was expected to discuss the situation on Monday with reporters. A ministry spokesperson declined to confirm the CTK report but told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that "I wouldn't say it is wrong."
Until now avian flu has not been detected in the Czech Republic, even though infected wild birds have been found in each of its neighbours - Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria.
To date 11 European Union countries have reported at least one suspected or confirmed case of the Asian strain of avian influenza H5N1 in wild birds. Last week Czech officials opened two new lab facilities to supplement a testing programme at SVU's national laboratory in Prague, where about 1 300 birds have tested negative in recent months. - Sapa-dpa
Another two swans killed by bird flu, total number reaches ten
Prague- Another two swans killed by bird flu have been found in the Czech Republic, both in Bavorovice near the south Bohemian centre Ceske Budejovice, State Veterinary Authority spokesman Josef Duben told.
All previous cases of bird flu have been detected in South Bohemia and they all involved swans.
The latest two swans have been found on the right bank of the Vltava river, almost on the same spot where the fifth swan victim was found a week ago. Tests showed that they died of the highly infectious H5 virus. "Since they have been found on the spot of the previous find, the declared protective measures will remain unchanged," Duben said.
Extraordinary veterinary measures have been in effect in the affected areas in south Bohemia since last week. Towns situated in the zones of strict protection and supervision must sum up all household poultry breeds and secure containers for dead birds.
Local breeders must not keep poultry in open-air enclosures.
A ban has been imposed on the transfer of poultry, eggs and further related material, and people's access to poultry farms has been limited. Steps have been taken to secure disinfection of people and cars in contact with the farms.
The extraordinarily measures are to last for 21 days at least.
Sixth case of bird flu found in Czech Republic Sun Apr 2, 11:36 AM ET
PRAGUE (AFP) - A sixth case of H5 bird flu was detected in a dead swan in the Czech Republic, officials said, but did not confirm whether the case was the strain potentially deadly to humans.
The infected swan was found near Ceske Budejovice, around 160 kilometres (100 miles) south of Prague, veterinary service spokesman Josef Duben told AFP.
"The swan was found near the same location as previous cases, so protection measures will be almost unchanged," Duben said Sunday.
A sample has been sent to the European Union Laboratory at Weybridge, Britain, for further tests with results expected in the next days, he added.
The swan was found in the same region where the first five cases of bird flu were discovered in dead swans over the last week. Only one of those cases has been clearly identified as the H5N1 strain, which can be fatal to humans.
Another was identified as the "highly pathogenic H5" strain of the virus.

First, it's far from "my government" (the UK government is my government), but I know what you mean. Second there's a general election in the offing and the ruling party (democratic socialists) are going to lose to the ODS (the 'odious party' I like to call them - right wingers). The current government hasn't done a good job on pandemic preps, I doubt the ODS will either. Like most places, it'll all come down to the individual anyway.
Found it at last then? Just up the river from me.
There was some talk of 10 on the radio last week, but it was only one report and wasn't repeated. Looks like 10 is coming soon though.
