I have a computer that I used to have Windows 98 on and I upgraded it
to Windows XP, when I did I converted the file system over to NTFS.
Well now I want to format my hard drive so that I can load Windows 98
back on this computer. So how do I format my hard drive and how do I
change my File System back to something that Windows 98 is compatiable
with?
Hello codymorgan,
I don't need to remind you, I'm sure, but check your existing
installation out for any files you want to keep, as the procedure
below will obviously wipe your hard drive:
Proceed as follows:
Visit:
Dr D's #Windows95 page:
http://www.drd.dyndns.org/index2.html
Scroll down to 'Windows 95, 98 & ME boot disks'
Find the line 'Boot disk for MS Windows 98 (Second Edition if
applicable)'
Click on the green disk to download the boot disk image wboot98.exe to
desktop.
Format a 5 1/4 inch 1.44Mb floppy:
Click 'My Computer'; Right Click 'A' drive; Choose 'Format' from menu.
With formatted disk in 'A' drive, double-click on wboot98.exe to make
the disk.
Power down your computer.
Power up your computer - it should boot up from the floppy, not into
XP.
When prompted, choose options as follows:
Choose 'start computer with CD rom support'
You should arrive at a DOS A:> Prompt.
Type 'fdisk' (no quotes)
Do you wish to enable large disk support? - Yes (default)
Should NTFS partitions on all drives be treated as large? - Yes
(default)
Choose option 3, delete all partitions.
Return to main fdisk menu,
Choose option 1, Create Primary DOS Partion.
Exit from fdisk.
Type 'format c:' (no quotes)
Now, with Windows 98 CD in the CD rom, (should be drive E),
Type 'cd E:' (no quotes)
Type 'setup' - Windows 98 setup will now begin.
Search strategy:
Searchterm used on Google:
Boot Disk
I hope this brings you success. If you have any questions before
proceeding, please feel free to ask me for answer clarification before
rating my research.

codymorgan,
Apologies, but the
Dr D's #Windows95 page:
http://www.drd.dyndns.org/index2.html
link needs clarifying; they seem to be using some method which is
hiding the true URL in the address bar:
Once there, you need to click on 'Boot Disks' in the top-of-page menu.
Best regards,
gan.
