Contacting a concierge (J, not SE)

  • I think that on a J fare (and upgraded Y?) I am allowed to use the concierge service if neccessary. I will be flying LHR-LGA via YYZ and would like to have contact numbers available if necessary. I can't find them on the website. How do I go about getting the 3 numbers that I might use? I had a pretty nightmare transit there last year (last month was much better) and want to have someone to call for assistance - just in case.

  • Entitled to use the service yes. If you can find one at the airport. You are not to be given the phone number and not allowed to call and ask for help before hand. I had the same problem in Dec 06. I called AE/AC and both told me the same thing.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to count on the Elite desk if there is a problem.

    Thanks,

    Dr. PITUK

  • But after several attempts AE and AC would not provide me with the phone number - which is just plain stupid. A key part of the service seems to be the ability to make a request for service in advance...

...or afterwards, as you know have the phone # for the entire year. And I can tell you, the concierges get whacks of calls from people who got the # from somewhere, including friends, uncles and nieces of SEs.

    Simon

  • I have pm'd you the phone numbers. The rules as per Air Canadas website say you must be travelling in Executive first. There is no addendum suggesting if you upgraded on a cert you are not entitled to it.
Just call if you have a problem and I am positive they will help.

The concierges in LHR are plentiful and highly visible. If travelling in Exec First (the website does not differentiate as to how you got there), you are entitled to concierge service. For the obvious reason that Simon explained you will not get the phone number, unless some naughty person gives it to you and therefore potentially dilutes the concierge service for other SEs

The logical thing for you to do, is introduce yourself to a concierge in LHR with Exec F BP in hand and let them know of your connection concern asking if they can help you.

Simon I have not found that to be the case. I am a personal friend of one concierge as she lives close to me. She claims that the amount of calls by non SE or Executive Internationals is a only a very very small percentage of her calls.

At YVR though their job also includes escorting many celebrities, dignitaries that are not SE or Executive Internationals. That takes more time up than does fielding calls from people not entitled to their services.

The concierge service is not a little club that needs to be protected from outsiders, thats what SE seems to be for many. It is a service for SE and Executive Internationals, so if someone is flying that way they deserve the number simple as that.

I do not subscribe to the theory that we should protect the phone numbers so that nobody can use them, but me!

  • Thanks all for the information. For this particular trip I am in paid J (not C, D or I). I just mentioned upgraded Y because I thought of it as I was typing.

Asking a desk staff to call a concierge when there are 30+ people waiting at a desk for service (happened to me in ORD once, though I was in Y so wouldn;t have tried a concierge) isn't ideal.

    Thanks,

    Dr. PITUK

  • I would think that any AC service rep can help you on the phone and put a request into the local concierge office. AFAIK the concierges look at every flight comng and going at their station and see if connections are tight for J passengers. The concierges are each assigned certain flights on major international routes.

If you have an actual problem at an airport you cana sk for a concierge and one will assist you.

  • My experience is exactly the opposite: that concierges feel (or are instructed) that their services are strictly for SE's, and decline to assist J class pax.

  • ...or afterwards, as you know have the phone # for the entire year. And I can tell you, the concierges get whacks of calls from people who got the # from somewhere, including friends, uncles and nieces of SEs.

I'm sure they do. And I have yet to abuse it. But I can tell you having a secret phone number is not a great way to control access to the service. How about having to provide a SE aeroplan number or a J class booking reference. Pretty simple to implement.

It is misleading for AC to claim that they offer this service to J travelers, when they do not offer the full service. What are you expected to do in such a circumstance? Flag a concierge down at the airport like a taxi?

  • Folks, Int'l J pax are entitled to the concierge as per the website...

At the very least, bring a printout of the page from the ac.com site...

but then again, you might want to see what Mr. Clipper801 has to say about this ;)

Yes, or simply ask a ckin/lounge/gate agent to call one for you.

  • I can't speak for an upgraded ticket.....but this Elite has called on the concierges on two occasions on D class international flight and received concierge assistance with a smile. No problem with my requesting help.

D is different from upgraded Y. Suppose the nature of the "help" would help determine why and how appropriate a Concierge would really be. Obviously, transit now at T1 will be a simpler process and not likely create any issues that would require the help of any AC staff, unless the person is somehow impaired...or a pain in the neck.

Transiting from an International flight now, you go to B Canadian Customs where you'll be fast-tracked into US preclearance and collect your checked bags there for processing, then you're back in the departure hall for your flight (or the MLL just past security on the upper level).

  • ...I can tell you having a secret phone number....

...is part of ErrorCanada's corporate culture.

However, individual concierges can be different as when I obtained the YEG # for a client of mine who flies his family of 4 twice each year to Hawaii and to LAX in full J (7-8 years in a row) the YEG ones were very helpful and lined up the YVR ones for him this past year. They did, however, want to know how he got the #. He said his lawyer got it for him and they never asked any more questions.:)

From what I was told you are allowed to use the service in I or D.

But after several attempts AE and AC would not provide me with the phone number - which is just plain stupid. A key part of the service seems to be the ability to make a request for service in advance...

I did get the number from a SE -- not that it helped. The concierge never called me back... This was 3 traveling in international in D.

I thought the concierge service for International J pax was for those who purchased such a ticket, not elites who upgrade their Y class tickets, if I am reading your OP properly. In which case, you would use the elite line.
