Bellsouth does not support DSL for Mac OS X. However it can be used
without support. I have had it connected for some months but have had
to have OS X retinstalled. After this reinstallation I can't get it
to work. Can someone give me detailed instructions.? XYMer's Home away from Home • View topic - Updating Tiger question :: I could swear I remember entering that stuff when I installed OS X. . What type of DSL modem did Bellsouth give you? They have been known
to give (without choice) several different types. Do you plug it into
an Ethernet card or is it USB?
My modem is a Speed Touch Home. It has a USB connection. The DSL
works fine with Mac 9.2 OS. The problem is getting it set up on Mac
OS X.
I have experience using several DSL modems, and experience using Mac
OS X, but Ive never used the two together. However, I think I can
still answer your question.
The best place to start is at Apples Mac OS X troubleshooting page.
They have some specific instructions on setting up with your DSL
connection:
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/macosx/tshoot.html
Apple has several articles that can help. BellSouths FastAccess DSL
uses PPPoE to connect to the internet using your DSL modem. PPPoE
stands for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet.

You will need to first configure your PPPoE settings. Apple gives you
step-by-step instructions in a document titled Mac OS X: How to
Connect to the Internet With PPPoE:
Many digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service providers require
customers to connect via PPPoE. Use the steps in this document to
connect.

You will need some information from BellSouth your username and
password, and possibly the IP address of the DNS server. According to
BellSouths support page for Windows XP, you will not need to
configure the DNS server, it will be acquired automatically. If you
cant find the PPPoE configuration option in Mac OS X, this document
will help:

Password

There has been some activity on the bellsouth.net.support.adsl Usenet
group regarding Mac OS X. The general consensus is that it should
work, but you some users recommend buying an external Ethernet router
to ensure good connections. You shouldnt have to do this, but it may
help. This may be a good forum for more in depth troubleshooting help
if it is needed. This URL (watch for breaks, its a long and strange
URL!) is the beginning of one lively thread on the subject:
