Here's an idea: let fliers assign the companion pass to a family member (with the same last name), so that the family can fly two for one. As an air commuter, it is quite rare for me to fly both directions of a round trip with them, so I get little use out of the pass.

It seems to me that you are asking even more of what is (according to the Freddies) the best airline bonus out there. Plus, it would add complexity to an otherwise simple concept.
For example, I am in the same situation where I usually fly with my companion from different places. I use the companion pass less than a half dozen times a year, but if someone gave it to their parents (same last name), their brother and his wife (same last name), they would probably use it MUCH more than you would, and that could cost SW some money. In fact, I'll bet you could auction it off to the highest bidder with YOUR LAST NAME (I don't put anything past eBay anymore).
