    For all transcon experts:

Which would be cheaper to upgrade with on a transcon: miles or stickers?

The route is BOS-LAX-BOS. Total actual miles for the trip (in the air) is approx. 2550 each way. (2550 x 2 = 5100 miles). The trip requires 12 upgrades for the round trip.

    I see costs as :
    Stickers (12 * 31.25) = 375.00

    Miles (30,000) * (.02/mile) = 600.00
    Expedite Fee for 75.00
    Award

    Total Cost using Miles 675.00

So, I conclude it costs $300 more to use the miles to upg. - does this make sense?

  • Makes sense. But...

If you really want to look on the bright side of things, 5100 miles is half of your 10,000 mile earned upgrade bonus. So you could look at it as getting 2 of your stickers "back" (1/2 of 4 earned upg's) for the trip, so it's really only 10 stickers. I'm (usually) an optimist; your opinions may differ.

Also, I have no idea as to the answer to this but if anyone does it may change your thinking: is the mileage upgrade to an X class (like stickers, with mileage and q-points calculated on fare purchased) or to F (or whatever), therefore providing the requisite q-point and mileage bonuses that might make it more worthwhile?

  • BOS-LAX is published (OAG) at 2611 miles.

    The "window" is indeed 50 miles, i.e., 2550=5 upg's, 2551=6.

  • And I think you would only need 5 upgrades each way - don't they give you a little window? It's a shame if you have to use an upgrade sticker for 50 miles.

  • I fly this route (and BOS/SFO) a lot. It takes 12 coupons per round trip.

If you're talking about bought upgrades versus miles, definitely use the upgrades. The only advantage to the miles is that you can confirm the upgrade much further out.

If you're going to use earned upgrades, convert 12 of them to miles -- which is 30,000 miles -- and then use them to upgrade.

  • My understanding is that the miles or q points you get are based on your original ticket. This is where I differ - I know it must seem like a long flight, but I'd rather have those 30,000 for a flight to Mexico, or buy a cheapie ticket to Rome with the money. But if upgrades are important and they are to many people on the board, then it's deciding if you have so many miles and they are easy to come by that you will do all they flying you want that using them doesn't deny you future travel, or that money out of your pocket doesn't matter. ( Didn't I read somewhere that there was some discount on miles for upgrades??? You might want to call Customer Service on this - I don't know how old the newsletter was.
