Well I am a fool. I tell everyone to type long webmail or forum posts in Word and save them as you work on them so you don't get screwed into losing the unsaved work by doing something stupid, and what do I do? Yup you guessed it. Anyway, here's as much as I can remember from the problem I was going to ask for help with:

I have Word 2002 on workstation that we're trying to clone for our offices. When certain user accounts are logged onto the workstation, they can't left or right click in the body of the Word document, but can on any menus and other areas of the program window. This also happens in the print preview window. Everything else works just fine.

I've found a workaround but it's unacceptable as a permanent solution. I can go to run or create a word shortcu with "winword.exe /a" and it works fine. I've tried several ways to fix it including installing word from scratch on a different workstation but we're still getting the same problem on certain (most) user profiles. As far as I can tell, there is no difference in the profiles when they're first created and they all have local admin access on the workstation.

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated!

  • I've tried deleting that as well and letting word recreate it. I still receive the problem. This is going to sound ludicrous, but at this point the only time I seem to experience the problem is if I make changes to the default user profile on the image I deploy to the workstations. It's more complicated than that, but the number of variables to consider at this point are too numerous for me to keep track of.

I was hoping someone had run into something similar to this and could offer a quick fix, but it appears this might be a unique problem. I'm going to keep the image that is having this issue and run more tests on it after I've deployed the new image I created from scratch the other day and have all these upgrades finished. This problem is seriously stressing me out.

  • Well two months later I ran accross the problem again (because I had forgotten to not do the thing that caused it) on a single box and instead of giving up and starting from scratch on it, I was motivated to have another stab at it. This time I was a little less logical in my investigating. I just started deleting stuff until I got to the problem. :goofy:

I ended up in regedit and deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice. I don't want to hear about how screwing around in the registry is bad blah blah. I knew I was going to have to reimage this box again if I didn't fix the problem so whatever I was going to do to it wouldn't matter.

Anyway, after deleting this key, I restarted Word, got asked for the product key (which was already entered for me), and after hitting finish on that, I was sent to Word and it WORKED NORMALLY. All clicking produced expected results!

I have a machine sitting in my office that still has the original image we made that has the problem, so I'm going to test my solution and narrow the issue down to the specific key. I'll keep yas posted.

  • It could be the users normal.dot file is corrupt - get them to delete the file and Word will create a new one for them.

  • Well I've narrowed down the cause of the problem. This is going to sound strange I'm sure. I started from scratch with an entirely new image and I STILL had the problem occuring if I did something specific. Somehow, creating a profile and then copying that profile to to another profile causes it to experience the error. This meant I couldn't create a profile to copy to the default profile or else every account created on that machine would experience the problem. Even if I had someone log in to create a default profile and then copied another profile over it, that still created the problem. This is beyond perplexing. If anyone could shed any light I would greatly appreciate it.

  • The fact that Word operates correctly when you do the winword.exe /a thing tells you that either normal.dot or some add-in that is started with Word is causing your problem.

The link below is a very good guide for solving weird problems.

  • I've also tried all the support options in the Word Support Template from Microsoft, but none of them had any effect on the problem.
