Air Canada, among the leaders in this area, created a series of steps to save on fuel costs more than a year ago, according to spokesperson Isabelle Arthur.
She said this project is a joint effort of all Air Canada's operational branches, including input from flight operations, inflight operations and the maintenance group.
The steps Air Canada has taken include:
Reducing cruising speed when flights are ahead of schedule.
Reducing speed when an aircraft has prevailing winds.
Taxiing on the ground with only one engine.
Taking more weight off planes with the use of lighter trolleys and cargo containers.
Optimizing the uses of water on board. Instead of flying with a full tank, the airline refills at a connecting destination.

Making sure external surfaces are cleaned to cut down on drag.
"All these things add up in the long run," Arthur said.
She didn't have a figure on the savings Air Canada is realizing from these steps. She said more would be divulged next week when Air Canada releases its financial results. I have only noticed this on some Dash-8 flights.....
Mind you any efficiencies are effectively wiped out when they make you wait on the tarmac for 20 minutes because your gate isn't ready.....as if you just fell out of the sky screaming "SURPRISE!"
I think AC has been very innovative in revenue generation as well - charging for services that used to be standard offerings.
Oh no. Others definitely pioneered those things way back. And are still on the cutting edge of gouging for what might be considered free services.
Did you know checking in is a privilege worth £3?
Paying with your credit card? Another privilege worth at least that much.
Just speaking to an agent is going to be worth £1/minute soon. If you don't get cut off after 20 minutes on hold.
AC hasn't even started getting to the industry leaders in the field.

I suspect there are a couple more things, such as not increasing speed even though the plane is behind schedule.
Those sorts of logistical issues are usually beyond the airline's control AFAIK.
Not when the stand is empty but the ground crew haven't turned up, or there is no one to drive the jetway or open the door. That IS the airlines resposibility

DITTO to that! More than 50% of my Canadian airport 2008 flights have had to hold short of the gate as there were no or not enough AC ground staff.

Not quite. You no longer pay for "standard offerings" you don't want.

Surprise, but with one engine running. There's your efficiency.
AC DC-9's taxied with one engine (baggage handler's suggestion) back in the Eighties I'm sure. If not at least the early Nineties.
Nothing new here.

Don't forget they no longer have food, pillows, blankets, magazines etc.
