AC lost my bag! :-(

Welcome to:nnkl.com

  • I was flying AC562 YVR-SFO of the 2nd of May and upon arrival in SFO my bag did not arrive and a claim had to be filed. (Note: my bags were tagged only up to SFO)

However, tomorrow (3rd of May), I'll be flying to ICN (on SQ), and then on to HKG (on CX) on the 5th of May.

Anybody had a similar situation before? Looks like my bags won't come in time for my SFO-ICN flight and they will have to be sent to HKG.

FYI, the flights are all on one ticket.

  • Anyway, I called American Express Platinum card servcies was told that I can buy up to $1000 of necessities, and if within 4 days my bag still isn't recovered, then it will be declared lost and I will get an additional $1000.

Yippee! Looks like you won the lottery.

Maybe I need to reassess my strategy to NEVER check a bag.

  • When I was flying YVR-SFO, the AC ramp agents somehow put my bag onto the US Airways flight departing at the next gate!!

Air Canada's India lost baggage call centre sucks!! I call them and all they can do is read from a script "I am very sorry that your bag is lost..." and then tell me the same information that I see from my file reference number on the Worldtracer website.

The AC India lost baggage agent then asks me to describe some of the contents in my bag. He was confused when I told him I had an unopened bottle of contact lens solution (he even asked me what it was for!!).

Anyway, I arrive at SFO extra early the following day hoping that my bag would show up (I called the AC India call centre again and was told that there is a possible match for my bag in SFO, but they can't tell me any further information) before I check-in for my SQ flight to ICN.

Once I got to SFO, I went to the AC baggage services office (Terminal 3) and it was not staffed. I went upstairs and apparently the guy who I dealed with on the previous day at the AC baggage service office was also the check-in agent at the Executive Class check-in counter. He told me to check with UA to see if my bag has arrived on one of their flights.

Then I go over to the UA lost baggage counter (Terminal 3) and was told that they don't have my bag and that I should walk around and see if my bag is in any of those "cages" that they put unclaimed bags into. No luck.

Then I thought to myself that somehow my bag must have probably flown in on AS (Alaska Airlines) and went over to their lost baggage office in Terminal 1 to see if my bag has arrived. I was told by the AS agent that they don't have my bag. However, the agent was nice enough to call the AS YVR station and ask for the AC YVR station phone number. My bag turned out to be with US Airways!

The AS agent even went as far as running over to the US Airways lost baggage counter to see if my bag is there! (She couldn't find it in the pile)

A few seconds later, the AC lost baggage guy in SFO calls my cell phone and tells me that my bag is with US Airways in the back office. I tell the nice AS agent that the bag is at US Airways, and she walks me over to the US Airways counter and lines up with me. Once we got to the front of the line, the US agent says "too late, we have already sent it via ramp transfer to the AC baggage office in Terminal 3".

So I go over to the AC baggage office in Terminal 3 and told the guy that my bag has been "ramp transferred" and should be at the back. He goes to the back and checks and it is not there and told me that I should wait another 30 minutes.

As time was running out, I went over to the International Terminal to check in at the SQ F counter without my bag. I told the SQ agent that I will be checking in my bag later. As I was checking in for my SQ flight, the AC baggage office guy calls me on my cell phone and tell me that the bag has been received.

I then go back to the AC baggage office in Terminal 3 and was reunited with my bag (which I subsequently hauled over to SQ to have it tagged and put on the flight)!

Once I arrived at ICN on SQ, my bag was the first to come out of the conveyor!! (I was the only first class passenger flying to ICN)

Note: When I arrived in SFO the previous day on AC, there was only 1 other priority bag and it came out almost last. I believe the owner of that priority bag also was missing a bag.

Also note: AS unlike AC, does not outsource their lost baggage department to India!! Their staff actually provides the passengers with the phone number for the baggages services counter at the airport!

Had it not been for the AS agent who took the initiative to call YVR, I would have checked in and boarded my SQ flight without my bag and still be wearing the same clothes I left the house in right now!

Also note: The "Expedite" US Airways baggage tag showed that my bag arrived on US 415 in SFO from PHX the previous night. Why wasn't worldtracer updated until the following day (causing me to run around the airport looking for my bag)?

  • call the call centre and complain.....they will authorize you $50 in spending money for neccessities. complain even more and they will go higher especially since you have to travel internationally.

Also, many credit cards have baggage insurance attached. Depending on what credit card you used to book you may be able to get some additional funds from them immediately for buying some necessities.

  • Yippee! Looks like you won the lottery.

Maybe I need to reassess my startegy to NEVER check a bag.

Most expensive underwear I ever bought was in Moscow, paid for by LH/Diner's club. Made in Italy, bought in a small shop at the Radisson (yes, the one owned by a former mayor, AKA as the mafia... Security looked very good.)

But no, I would still rather travel light, only with carryons if possible, rather than having to deal with these things.

  • I heard it was the pink number with the frills! :D

    A cattle-esque thong, perhaps? ;-)

But daniellam is going long haul... to many exotic places and in need of many liquid toiletries. Perhaps you can do without the moisturiser but many people do need to beauty on up!

  • my best advice to you is TRY to recover and move on quickly!

Because this will not be the last time, so you have to deal wit it and get prepared in future.

  • So what? How many bags do you think they lose everyday?

You may have been lucky in the past, but presumably, if you fly enough, it's bound to happen to you isn't it?

Sheesh, tough crowd. Good luck OP and hope what failed to show wasn't that vital.

  • I have to give it to Air Canada tonight....they really redeemed themselves (at least a little bit) in my books tonight.

Flight left Sudbury about an hour and a half behind schedule.
Landed in Toronto 15 minutes before my connecting flight was supposed to take off. Luckily it was delayed by a few minutes.
Made my connection...and got my bags!

Made my rotten day, a little better!
