AA's fares keep r-i-s-i-n-g!

  • Okay so I stole it from someone's else old advertisment! But I think AA should use it now.

In spite of laying off so many staff, cutbacks on meals, closing of offices, cuts on flights and getting a huge injection of funds ... there has been a steady rate of fare increases that is impossible to miss because it targets people originating their trip from the US!

I booked a trip from LAX to BKK in Sep for ticket 1 week prior to departure in early April 2002. A message from AA advised me that the fare is due to increase, do I want to issue the ticket? As certain segments on partner airlines were not confirmed I declined. (Should have though) AA's fare in Sep then via NRT was $690. After I cancelled, I realised the fare inchec its way to over $990. Today I checked and the fare is now over $1180. Compare that with UA's $718 fare!
Canadians in flight: Canadian Geographic Magazine September ::
Today, flights are crowded, delays are frequent and fares keep rising. Gone are Wardair, Nordair and CP Air. Air Canada is the master of the airways,

I also checked another fare... from LAX to LHR. For travel 9 April. $781. But from LHR to LAX, it's $430!

I've had many fares changed since this month as AA keeps changing flights, fares, routings that it's getting to the point of ridiculous. One wonders if its worth flying AA after all!

  • Yup, I had a cheapo 14 day advance fare DFW-LGA for November on hold Thursday. I had till Fri midnight to purchase, so (I should have known better) I figured no rush. Today (Fri) whan I went to purchase, it had jumped about 10% ($20).

  • I too have noticed a significant and constant increase in fares since they stopped the "big sale" a few weeks ago.
I would say to be patient for now until AA finishes adjusting schedules and figures out capacity right now. It might take a few weeks, but I think once December rolls around we'll start to see some real good fares again, esp to Europe and I'm hoping South America too.

  • I was looking at flights from Miami to New York in early December. They jumped about 35 per cent between Thursday and Friday.

My flights to and from Chicago last week meanwhile were were booked to capacity. AA must be doing okay, n'est pas?

  • What goes up, comes back down. AA just finished a fare sale on the 17th. They need to hike fares to justify the "sale price". Just becuase planes are "full" does not mean that the airline is doing well. AA has cut over 20% of its schedule and staff, that will cause some flights to look fuller than they would have been.

AA had some great deals to Latin America (ASU for under $800) and great deals to Europe for October travel. The deals for November==>March travel were only so so. Many people are flying now for the double mileage offer or had booked before 9/11. The real test will be January==>March travel and my money is on cheaper fares like the $299 return fares to Europe offered last Feb.

You can't read too much in looking at fares for flights that originate outside of the USA. If you need a good example, look at business/first fares from Canada to Europe.

  • My good friend 9thanks to this Board) told me this. What a contrast. The AA fares over here to the USA have dropped like a stone..promotional fares I should stress. I have not checked the J or F fares. I am sorry to sound like an econmoist but is the demand for air travel currently so inelastic that you can just hike the fare?

  • You need to look at fares originating OUTSIDE North America and that includes Canada!

Fares from Europe to USA are low mainly because most Europeans are wary about flying on US carriers now and airlines must justifty to fill their planes as much as possible.

  • AA has had good deals to Santiago, Chile the past few years (under $400 r/t), I'm hoping they have one again this year. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
