American Airlines today applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for authority to fly from Chicago O'Hare International Airport to both Shanghai and Beijing. In its application, American proposed to operate the Shanghai route daily and the Beijing route three times per week with 237-seat Boeing 777IGW aircraft starting April 1, 2001. No other airline offers nonstop service between Chicago and China.

U.S. and Chinese government officials signed a Protocol on April 8 expanding aviation relations. The agreement permits each government to select one additional airline to operate flights between the United States and China and doubles the number of weekly flights permitted between the two countries.
