According to the press release, *A upgrades will be rolled out to all airlines 1Q08. What will this mean for the value / quantity of upgrade certs? Seems like it's going to kill most of the benefit of the P/E/SE packages now.

I think as a worst-case thing for a non-status traveller (the majority of the population) with a boat-load of CC-earned miles, it could still be a good chunk of savings
If you'd done a search you'd find this well discussed in at least a half-dozen other threads as recent as last month. This subject has been posted to death! IN BRIEF; Architect to Suggest Upgrades For Atlantic City :: Jon Jerde, who has never been to Atlantic City, will be paid $75000 to come up with a strategy to upgrade the landmark. It seems as though many say the *alliance upgrades are pretty much useless, if this is the case, why do they even bother with them then?
I don't think it'll have a huge impact because:
1) It seems to usually only be for full-ish fares (B/Y) - E/P can confirm upgrades at time of booking for these
2) It's almost as much as a reward ticket (70,000 to Europe for example vs. 80,000 for a free ticket)
So if you think of it that way, it helps to quantify the E/SE benefits -- if you upgrade on two round-trips to Europe per year, you're getting a 'value' of 140,000 miles. My value is well over 300k so I feel pretty good about AC's benefits looking at it this way!
I think given #2 it should apply to all tickets. I'd love to be able to buy a cheap ticket all the way to SYD/AKL, and pay say 3/4 the award miles to actually get status miles for it
