I recently traveled DFW-BOS. The air miles are 1565. I upgraded to F using certificates. Four certificates were deducted from my account. At 500 miles each, this means the fourth 500 certificate was for only the last 65 miles. Is this right or is there a way I can appeal and get one of the certs back?
Just wondering.
P.S. BTW, I would have gladly moved to the back of the plane for the last 65 miles, if that will help in the future! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Of course it would make more sense, but as has been established over and over on these boards, AA does what they like. I'm sure their position is that you're getting upgraded without paying with $$s so you should be happy. I tried to appeal flights from Dallas to Miami and didn't get anywhere when I upgraded my wife and my tix. It was 1121 miles each and I paid 6 stix. 2x1121 = 2242 but I was charged 6x500, or 3000 miles worth of stix.
No matter how you slice it, they give you 50 miles overage per person and nothing more.
One option is to grab yourself some fast food, an exit row seat, and trade in your upgrade stix for miles. (4 stix = 10,000 miles!)
Hey it's great that they even give you a 50 mile cushion. Remeber all these upgrades are perks. They really don't owe us anything no matter how many miles we fly. I sometimes think people here are way too greedy. If you value First Class so much buy the ticket. Problem solved.
Whatever they do, there will always be a flight that's one mile over the limit. They have to draw the line somewhere. I'd personally rather see it a bit higher, since I fly DFW-BOS (the route that started this thread) a good deal, but I can't make a case that 50 miles per segment is much less reasonable than any other number. If they made it much higher, they'd have to start calling these things "550-mile upgrades." Then the argument would start all over again at that figure.
It was different when real, live humans did the upgrades. They could listen to arguments about two passengers, total trip length and all that. Sometimes they'd take one less sticker than the rules strictly required as a result. Now that computers are in charge, though, there isn't much you can do - except talk to a reservation agent or customer service after the fact and ask them to put an upgrade back in your account. If you have a case and are nice about it, they just might!
If AA 500 mile upgrades work similarly to UA 500 mile upgrades, there is a 50 mile total "cushion" when using the certs so that 1550 miles would be 3 but 1551+ would be 4 (this still would not have helped your case). As a relatively new AA flyer, does this kind of a "cushion" exist for AA upgrades too? Thanks. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

unfortuantely, 3x500=1500. and with a little more than 1500 you would have to use 4 stickers.
I thought i saw a thread long ago about sweet talking the agents in saving 1 sticker...but i might be drunk when i read the thread... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

The fairest way to do it would be to have each credit good for 1 mile, and give 2000 credits when you cross 10,000. No more threshholds to worry about. For that matter, get rid of the 10,000 barrier and just issue 1 credit when you fly 5 miles.
Problem is, AA has little incentive to make this change.

Yes, AA does provide a 50 mile "cushion" so that a trip of 1,550 miles will only require 3 upgrades.
Unfortunately, 1,561 is just a *tad* too much.
I for one like the 50 mile leeway. They could give you only the 500 miles and nothing else. While sometimes you will use an extra upgrade for that extra 51 miles, that does not happen a lot. And, if you don't like it, exchange the upgrades for miles.
Jjaz; Moving to the back of the plane for the last 65 miles wont help as your seat up front was allocated to you from gate to gate, as agreed. But I wished you had an email contact.
