| | We now have a severe thunderstorm just se of Sparta WI. Radar also showing a TVS with this storm. A tornado watch has been issued for central/ne Iowa into central WI. Thought I would start a now thread since the day is starting to become active.
nice radar presentation on the lake county Illinois cell now with reports of a tornado near Cary which is in Mchenry county
tornado on the ground in mundelien,
(This is Joel Wright on Jeremy Ludin's computer)
Cells really exploding in northern Iowa now. We're on route 65 heading towards Mason City. Nice back-sheared anvil on the big cell west of Mason City. Three distinct cells have potential the way it looks as of now. For now we're going after the northern most cell, but if the middle or bottom one start to look even better we may head for those.
Some other nice towers to the east as well, but we like the increasing helicity values from I-35 points west...
Cook, IL Lake, IL storm is making in HP transition now as Fox News reports the tornado is wrapped in rain. It appears the circulation is weaker on radar in the last scan. Damage has not been all too bad, and no injuries or fatalities. A bullet may have been dodged.
Looking at the LOT LSRs, I doubt a bullet was dodged; damage reports are starting to come in, and one uses the language "houses destroyed" and "homes were flattened." The hook signature travelled right over a relatively densely populated area and spotters confirmed a tornado on the ground. It didn't go through downtown Chi town, but the burbs of Chicago are a bad place to have a large tornado go through.
Rotation mentioned by Mr. Carman is now TOR-warned and heading toward Mauston WI.
The storm in SC Wisconsin has been a solid right mover for the last 45 min or so, maintaining it's rotation and heading towards the Milwaukee metro by 1900-2000z. I was going to head out to chase the SW WI storms but I now opted to stay put west of the metro area and let them come to me.
Tornado reported in the Mundelein (northern suburb of Chicago).. this is a very densely populated area.

ANOTHER TORNADO WARNING THIS TIME FOR LAKE COUNTY, IL.
EDIT : PREVIOUS TORNADO NEAR ODELL, IL YOUTUBE http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZWRuwFSnXJ8
Tornado on the ground in Douglas County Nebraska (Tornado in OMAHA).
NWS report via spotter network, houses destroyed SE of Richton Park (E of governors HWY) , I-57 shutdown both directions due to semis overturned via WMAQ chicago.
Hope damage/injury is not widespread.
Eddie
EDIT: Andrew reports to have seen 3 separate apparently violent tornadoes before lossing the storm near I-80; he will post video later tonight.
5:37 pm 30 mi south of downtown Chicago

The Mauston storm sure does look like an HP monster, and the velocity presentation looks quite impressive. Almost reminds me of the Viroqua/Viola storm from August 18, 2005.
Meanwhile the Clayton County cell may remain discrete if it can absorb the small cells developing south of it, or one of those may take over as the tail end cell as they move into Grant/Crawford Counties, WI. Acknowleged, I was listening to Fox and they reported more of a skipping action. But I understand that much of the tornado was a multivortex occasional wedge up to a half-mile wide. Still if nobody is dead or badly injured, then that is great news.
Grant County storm now has a mighty nice hook...haven't seen a radar presentation like that over Wisconsin in about 3 years. :)
Rotating wall clouds being reported just north of the Grant/Crawford County line.
I WAS ABLE TO GET ANDREW PRITCHARD LIVE ON THE AIR NOW ON LIVE ON NEWS RADIO 780 CHICAGO
http://www.wbbm780.com/index.php
LIVE THREATENING SITUATION WITH LARGE TORNADO!
Joel Wright and I are south of Parkersburg IA heading west towards Iowa Falls on route 20. New cells firing near I-35 look pretty weak at this point, but we're hoping that changes real quickly.
Cell southwest of the Quad Cities is now tornado warned, which almost makes us wish we had stayed home lol. Save some gas anyway.
Awesome looking towers all around so we're hoping these cells west of us take off here real soon.
Large tornado reported earlier in Livingston County, IL. Southern Cook county and Will county now under tornado warning, southern suburbs of Chicago under the gun, strong couplet still apparent on radar with spotter reporting a new tornado near Braidwood, IL near I-55.
Eddie
Andrew reporting that the tornado is very large right now. I hope he goes live on news radio 780.

Cook, IL Lake, IL storm is making in HP transition now as Fox News reports the tornado is wrapped in rain. It appears the circulation is weaker on radar in the last scan. Damage has not been all too bad, and no injuries or fatalities. A bullet may have been dodged.
With the amazing radar presentation, I would believe that this particular supercell would have had to have some amazing structure. Hope someone photographed it.
It looks like one huge convective blob, but the low level rotation/couplet is impressive at .50 tilt base radial velocity. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a confirmed tornado shortly.
Live stormchase cam from Kory Hartman up right now at the circulation near Mason City, Iowa. Good video right now
http://www.severestudios.com/livechase
Thought I'd throw New Mexico into today's thread.... mainly because the radar is showing an 83 dbz return on a storm near Tatum. One top is off the scale on the Weather Tap site. Looks like a larger area than just a hail spike. Anyone else see this? Maybe the calibration on the WXT site is off?
W.
(In Amarillo).
Another NASTY hook echo is tornado warned 15 miles to my north. Great radar presentation, and southerly inflow winds have just kicked up here. Now the far northern burbs could be in trouble!
Spectacular backsheared cumuliform anvil overhead in Schaumburg here, picking up the last rays of sunlight.
Report from Andrew: Tornado roped out and reformed. Claims it is a "May 3rd" tornado!
New TOR warnings coming downstream of the HP monster...new verbage from the ARX mets is getting worse: the tornado, baseball hail and winds in excess of 80 mph. The circulation has just crossed over I-90/94 in southern Juneau county.
*edit* Reports of house damage in Juneau county starting to filter in.
*edit 2* Looks like a new circulation now spinning up to the SW of the main rotation.
Net control asking for damange reports in Lake County and none are coming in at the moment.
RFD rolled through our Super 8 here at the I-80/I-680 junction with the possible tornado moving about two miles north of us. Power went out across the street as the main thrust of the storm rolled through. Insane wind and rain swept through moments before the tornado warning was issued and sirens went blazin'. Amazing to watch an entire three story hotel come to life at 3:00am. LOL
Reports of damage and a tornado in Millard which is about two miles to our immediate west. The crew and I will remain here after the long day, but holy cow was that a late night rush.
The storm moving into the southern Chicago suburbs is still showing strong rotation and law enforcement reported a large tornado 10 minutes ago. As of 6:27 CDT the tornado is close to Park Forest and is moving to the northeast at about 30mph.
Another storm with a good hook and decent rotation was located in Richland county Wisconsin. A possible tornado could be less than a mile southwest of Yuba, Wisconsin.
Edit: A funnel cloud was sighted near Yuba.
The storm by Wapello in SE Iowa looks to have strong rotation with it now and I did not think that area was favorable for tornadoes. I guess I was wrong.
Amazing hook echo 5 mi. south of Lebanon, Kansas.
I'm listening to the SkyWarn net here in Lake County and there was a tornado reported on the ground just south of Mundelein, Illinois by a county Sherriff and one spotter. As it's traveled through the county, only rotation and funnels have been reported. Storm has a nice hook at this time.
The storm by Praire Du Chien has a confirmed wall cloud with it and strong rotation. Northern Iowa is starting to light up with storms and se Iowa also has a descent storm. Looks like we have a very active day ahead of us.
Nobody has mentioned the cyclic supercell that has tracked from LaSalle County, IL and now is entering southern Cook, IL. At one point there was a large and extremely dangerous tornado according to spotters.
Not much developing here otherwise, but I think outflows might make things interesting for Chicago tonight.
The possible tornado near Wisconsin Dells is not the only problem:
IN ADDITION TO THE TORNADO...THIS STORM IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
TENNIS BALL SIZE HAIL AND DESTRUCTIVE STRAIGHT LINE WINDS IN EXCESS
OF 90 TO 100 MPH. WIDESPREAD...SIGNIFICANT WIND DAMAGE IS LIKELYWITH THESE STORMS. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION!
It looks like the storm(s) near Mauston and SW of there are turning into one huge convective blob as they move into the moisture pool. I don't hold much hope for a discreet cell in this environment.
*edit* New TOR warning for weak rotation over Clayton county, IA with the almost-discreet tail end storm.
*edit 2* Nice couplet in southern Juneau County and a new TOR warning in Northern Sauk to go with it as the storm is turning right and moving east instead of NE now. The warning text includes golfball hail and 80 mph winds. Yikes.
So far today, the main show has been along the boundary, but I'd still be keeping an eye out for development further S, perhaps 30 miles NW of Des Moines... There's been a persistent SFC moisture convergence bulls-eye in that area, and satellite trends over the last 30 minutes have been indicating some locallized enhancement of the CU. Low-level directional shear has increased dramatically over the last two hours on an increasing LLJ. A small amount of CIN has remained in this area, with some increasing but weak assent indicated on the WV loop. If storms fire here, they will likely be discrete and tornadic. We'll know by 6:30 or so if initiation will happen in the south target - one or two more satellite updates will tell - bill
Andrew Pritchard on Spotternetwork has reported another large and extremely dangerous tornado on the ground near I55 in Will/Cook counties in IL. There appears to be a debris ball on the circulation. This is not good for the south side of Chicago as the storm appears to be strengthening!!
Andrew Pritchard reports that I-57 is now closed due to damage around there, and he is having trouble getting out of the damage path, major traffic.
18Z OAX/DVN soundings show 3000 and 4000 J/kg MLCAPE respectively. DVN has nice low-level thermodynamics with 900m MLLCL and 140 CAPE below 3km agl. Omaha still has some CINH to overcome (though negligible if the virtual temp correction is applied)... with 13.4C at 700mb (a little toasty). Both soundings show fairly modest low level shear exists in the warm sector of the surface boundary, with around 75 m2/s2 0-1km SRH for cells moving at 25035kt.
Edit: 700-500mb temps on the 18Z OAX sounding have warmed 2C or so since 12Z. Makes me wonder if shortwave ridging is occuring and how long it will take to get initiation across far eastern NE/far western IA.
@David wow. pray that it avoids populated areas.
