Tornado watches up for northeast CO/southwest NE/northwest KS ... but the big show right now is in PA/MD/WV/VA. The DC metro area is about to get pounded by a massive MCS w/ bowing segments. Tornado warnings just west of the metro area right now. TVS with 103 knts just north of Leesburg!
Here are the current watch boxes: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/watch/
There was a nice hook on the last scan near Loup City NE with that storm. The storm near Stockville NE also showing rotation with it. Looks like we have 3 tornadic storms in NE with the storm east of Lexington currently tornado warned. Radar is indicating a tornado with that cell. The line continues into CO where we have 2 more tornado warned storms. New showers/storms are firing in SW IA/NW MO and a new WW could be issued for that area. Looks to be a long night.
EDIT: There is 2 TVS and a purple circle with the storm near Stockville NE. GRLevel3 is showing rotation in that area. Would not be suprised to see this storm go tornado warned soon.
Confirmed tornado on the ground heading towards Redoak IA. It could be a large rain wrapped tornado according to the CH8 Met.
Nice supercell just south of Fredricksburg, VA. It's been tornado warned for awhile, but no tornadoes reported, yet.
Tornado sirens going off in Red Oak, not good for that town. I was listening live to KCSI in Red Oak and the live stream just went to static. Not good.
*Edit - They are back on the air now..
*Edit - Reports of 100 MPH winds just north of Red Oak, IA.
Lincoln Supercell is now diving southeast towards the city. The city of Lincoln is under a tornado warning. Storm has taken a dramatic turn to the southeast. The gate to gate on the storm moving over Ceresco and towards Omaha is, well, quite impressive. Unless it's some weird radar artifact -- I mean, it's a good 7 miles wide and spinning all the way up to the top radar scan. I'm wondering if Ceresco is still there.
Tornado reported by spotters near Pacific Junction, IA moving east at 10 mph just after 6 pm.
Tornado reported on the ground near Emmerson with the suppercell by RedOak.
Possible tornado near Clearfield now with a third tornadic storm in southcentral Iowa. Radar showing strong rotation with that storm.
Tornado reported near Murray Nebraska. Can see the storm from my house and it looks very well defined.
Impressive bow echo just raced through the DC area with a number of tornado warnings for spinups on the gust front as well as one embedded supercell with the QLCS. National Airport and Andrews AFB both had gusts over 50 kt. Here on the south side of town, the wall of rain and wind arrived extremely quickly.
Two big areas of circulation by Afton now. Jeff Patrowski is reporting a tornado on the ground and a massive wall cloud north of Afton on Ch8. He is also reporting winds in excess of 100 MPH.
Patrick Martin and I in Alma NE. Storms we can see north of I-80 are looking soft, so waiting on things to crank up. We are streaming on Severe Studios as internet connectivity allows. That storm in SW IA had very impressive Velocity readings earlier and a consistent hook echo.. Classic cell..
The cell west n south of Omaha is absolutely huge and has to have excellent structure..Wonder if Mike Hollingshead is on it..Baseball size hail reported earlier or larger.. with VIL earlier insane acc to nexrad attributes..lightning extremely intense reported..The velocity showing a fantastic image... 2_QuarterlyHazMatCarrierList:: File Format: Microsoft Excel1225, ENGINEERED LUBRICANTS CO, 11525 ROCK ISLAND COURT, MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO, 63043, 8008760008, UPM0208368OH, 0208368, 10/31/06, 1/1/08, 1/1/08, OH http://www.michigan.gov/documents/deq/deq-wmd-hwp-alpha_193671_7.xlsHOME |
Storm Spotters are reporting a wall cloud with the storm near Osceola. Also winds in excess of 100 MPH,Large Hail and Tornadoes are possible with the Redoak suppercell.
Incredible area of rotation with the supercell northwest of Lincoln, if this thing holds together it may track close to the Omaha metro area... at this time it may go just south of there. It looks like it will be chugging along for some time.
Supercell east of Red Oak, IA still looks very dangerous and is turning ESE. Still reports of wall cloud and baseball size hail with this storm.
Supercell west of Osceola, IA is still tornado warned but is looking less impressive. The Red Oak supercell may eventually take this area over.
Crazy looking hook south of Omaha, near Murray and Plattsmouth, slowly moving ENE and spotters reporting tornado on the ground in Murray. Looks to hopefully pass east of Omaha and Council Bluffs.
EDIT: Still dropping tubes... TVS south of Glenwood, IA.
Twin supercells in southwest Iowa right now. The one near Red Oak looks particularly nasty. They both have stopped moving northeast and have hooked hard to the right. Now moving due east. These cells are near the warm front where the moisture is pooled quite nicely. Going to be an active night in southern Iowa.
Here is live streaming video from KETV in Omaha; they're covering the IA & NE storms.
http://www.ketv.com/video/9312602/index.html
Cell in Clarke & Union Co. Iowa had a 145 knt TVS a second ago. Looks like the circulation/probable tornado is going to come very close to Afton. Hopefully Creston was spared to the south.

Tornado warnings up for North western Indiana, no reports of touchdown though at this time
StormSpotters reporting a large rain wrapped torndao with the suppercell east of Redoak.
Jeff Patrowski is the one reporting the tornado on Ch8. He says debris is falling now and it is rain wrapped at times. Repeating a large destructive tornado is moving towards Corning.
EDIT: The tornado has missed Corning thankfully.
That storm east of Akron CO has rotation with it on the velocity scan aswell as a TVS and a Red Circle showing there is spin in the atmosphere there I think. The area of rotation can clearly be seen on the tail end of the storm.
EDIT: It just went TOR warned.
EDIT2: Public reporting a tornado on the ground with this storm.
Scattered storms with a few supercells now popping in IL/IN along the warmfront. At the same time, lake breeze front now sinking slowly SW toward the approaching warmfront. Might be an interesting low level shear situation setting up. Throw in a couple FFD from the supercells now moving northward. The one near Pontiac, IL has a nice look on radar. It has turned right and is likely anchored on the boundary, look out anyone in the path of this one.
But Chicago and NW of there will remain storm free as usual.
Just arrived in Hays, and parked in the back lot of the Applebees if anyone wants to come around and BS befor initiation. First storm of the day has fired in NE Colorado. Cumulus field is starting to deepen over NW Kansas at this time. No deffinate towers though, that I can see from Hays.
Fairly impressive velocity scans near or just south of Red Oak Iowa. Sure hope it's in fact a touch south of the city.
Extrapolating a bit takes the meso towards the Villisca Iowa area, or maybe a touch north. Any more right-turning could take it that way though. Lets hope the meso (possible tornado) goes between these larger communities.
A possible tornado with a area of rotation moved through Corning IA and a second area of rotation moving into Corning. A stormchaser is reporting on Ch8 a tornado is on the ground with a huge debris cloud moving towards the town of Corning. He says it is a multivortex quarter mile wide tornado. He is saying it is a very destructive tornado.
The massive suppercell moving towards Afton Iowa now has a very broad exspansive area of circulation around 1 mile wide. A large tornado could be on the ground right now according to CH8. This circulation is moving towards Afton. This area is now under the gun from it's second tornadic storm of the day.
The cell that approached Omaha (that also dropped tornadoes in Ulysses, Bee and Polk) bowed out and quickly moved across Omaha. Looks as though moisture is feeding in and backbuilding across extreme SE NE/NE KS.
The storm just south of Akron, CO, is looking nasty. It's showing two TVS's...might clip the southern part of town.
