  • Just wondering is up right now and watching the supercell in central IL right now. SE of the lincoln radar site. Looks pretty amazing on radar right now!

  • Another cell is trying to get its' act together just SE of Lawrence. We're due south of it and will be closing in over the next few minutes. We took off out of Wichita earlier heading up the turnpike thinking this was the way to go.

  • Wall cloud on the storm nth of Ottawa was looking good a few minutes ago, looking a bit ragged right now.

  • It really is exploding right now. I can't help but wonder about shear, just because surface winds seem so calm outside for the time being. That could modify with the right near-storm environment, though. Apparently there is plenty of CAPE available to this thing.

The storm track is aimed straight over my house, and I'm definitely looking for the core to come somewhere close. How nice for Kansas City ... and for my roof! At least this will be an easy chase.

Edit - lol, when I zoom in all the way on the storm track line, it LITERALLY is over the top of my house. This thing is already looking supercellular.

  • 0215z STROTHER FIELD AIRPORT COWLEY, KS PRIVATE COMPANY MEASURED A 112 MPH WIND GUST AT THE AIRPORT. (ICT)

  • Large funnel now ,,,, looks like it could go!

  • An oil tank blew up in KC, K about 15-20 minutes ago; there is some thought it may have been due to lightening. Stormy weather must be making it hard to fight.

They are saying it was due to lightning. What is scary though is that tank is right next to 3 other ones full of gasoline.

Very impressive lightning from down here in Peculiar.

  • KC area TV stations reporting on the storm in the metro area now (my GRLvl3 shows it as Cell J0). One station reported possibly lowering (visible from helicopter). I'm in NW Olathe, just E of K-7, and looking north I am seeing it (and what I assume is one of the weather helicopters). Assume this is the same thing Chris is showing on his Chase Cam?

  • I hear ya Mike, we're going to take I-435 across the south side of town and try to catch up with it on the east side of town. Right now we're in Olathe and the storm is just to our north and ever so slightly west.

  • Seems to be that the KC-area storms are merging into a train now--now mostly concerned with hail and (especially) rain. Rotation on J- seems to be slowing/fading now? TV helicopters talking extensive lowering but not as much rotation, although there is discussion that it could be rain wrapped.

  • Seeing RFD cut on the wall cloud west of Lee's Summit. I'll watch this for a few, but plan to head south to get the new storm moving between here and Harrisonville. The wall cloud looks good. Wish all this other stuff wasn't in the way -

edit - starting to look pretty choppy. There's nothing like chasing storms through a city filled with trees, hills and people.

edit 2 - this thing just got really sweet looking again -

  • The storm by KC has vil's of 70-75 with a 80% chance of severe hail but no warning on it yet. I would expect large hail to be falling from that storm or alot of rain. The storm in the Oklahoma panhandel has vil's of 70-75 and is capable of tennis ball sized hail. Also a 56 MPH wind gust reported with this storm I believe.

  • Observable rotation in Lee's summit. Still pretty choppy, but very interesting to watch -

  • You can add Missouri and Kansas to the thread if you'd like.

Initiation visually confirmed on the west side of the tor-watched box over and north of MCI metropolitan area.

  • I am streaming live from just outside Kansas City. Tracking storm as it moves ENE

  • TV spotter report of strong rotation and funnel clouds near I-435 and Stateline in KC metro area.

  • I'm using 146.520 for any operators out there (kc0tcc). Think I'm going to go ahead and move a bit east and south to avoid the hail.

  • Storm entering the KC metro just picked up a heck of a lot of VIL on the past scan. Garbage N and S of it nearby might be spelling the quick beginning to a line but there's still enough CAPE to give it oomph over the metro area before it lines up. 22z RUC shows an area of poor CAPE near KC but it's isolated and likely a hiccup; strong CAPE is everywhere else.

Shear just isn't enough to keep this discreet for long if other stuff keeps firing up IMO but as it is going to truck right over the metro immediately it's something I'm gonna keep my eye on.

  • Andrew Pritchard, Mark Sefried, and Brad Emel are all around the Morgan, Sangamon County, IL storms. Andrew reports a multi-vortex tornado was skipping around for 20 minutes as it headed for Jacksonville. They are now focusing on the storm in Greene and Jersey county where another tornado was on the ground.....waiting to hear back from him.

  • Oxford and Hamilton, Ohio look to be hammered by a rain-wrapped tornado. Latest GR scan showing an eye in the hook of the storm about to cross the state border. Crazy stuff in my homestate as my home county has already been tornado warned with the possible tornado moving south of my town (Circleville).

  • Per GR3, Springfield, Mo looks to be in the path of that nasty MCS.

check out the storm speed on the cell to the north!!!!

    * AT 1154 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM 7 MILES WEST OF
RACKET TO HARPER TO ARNICA...MOVING EAST AT 107 MPH. THESE STORMS
ARE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DESTRUCTIVE WINDS IN EXCESS OF 80 MPH.

Have'nt seen that in a while!

  • We're about to turn north on I-470 and will plan to meet this beast on the east side of town in the next few minutes. Better look up your insurance agent soon Mike!!

  • Sean Wilson interviewed on Channel 5 in KC, the news SkyTracker is tracking a large rotating wall cloud on the south side of KC. It has been very persistent and is now showing signs of stronger rotation along I-435.

  • Have fun with that one, Mark. It will be moving directly into the metro at rush hour. Eek! I'm going to wait around for a bit until one passes overhead or intensifies to the point of interest and then head out after it. I'm tempted to try and guestimate the path of the one west of town, and then go ahead and move into intercept position east of KC to wait for it to cross traffic.

Wonder where I'll end up tonight ...

  • Local spotter net in Johnson County, Kansas has several spotters reporting a wall cloud with some rotation in it in the northern part of the county in Shawnee/Lenexa. Looks like radar has the rotation between I-435 and K-7 north of K-10.

I am currently in Gardner watching the southern storm to see if anything goes there.

  • Yeah ... there's a new, healthier meso back to the west ... the copters are still flying over my head on this one but I'm sure they've spotted the new one by now, Great lightning!
