There are reports in the news and posts elsewhere on the board about people waiting up to 5 hours to get through check-in and security at these two airports. Is it just certain airlines? Has anyone flown AA from these two airports?

Flew out of BWI on AA last Friday (12/14) morning around 9:30. Arrived at 8:00, used One Stop curbside and cleared security by 8:10. The F check-in line appeared to have 2-3 people, and the regular check-in line about 30 people, with each line staffed by 2 agents.
Southwest has the long waits.
I flew out of BWI about 3 weeks ago. The wait was only 3 and 1/2 hours. That must have been a good day! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Actually, there was an interesting article in the Washington Post this weekend. It stated that many people missed their flights (after waiting in line for 4+ hours)because so many passengers arrived so very early that the whole system was paralyzed.
So, if I understand this correctly, we have to arrive early - no wait not THAT early. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
The 5 hours lines at OAK are at the Terminal used almost exclusively by Soutwest Airlines (and for which Southwest contracts security), according to http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/kpix/20011221/lo/2070_1.html . Ever since 9/11 Southwest has had real long lines, and it looks like they still don't have a handle on the situation. But then, you get what you pay for!
AA departs from a different terminal.
AA have an alert on their website right now, as follows:
"We are experiencing lengthy processing times at the following airports: Boston, Baltimore, Washington Dulles, Indianapolis, New York's Kennedy and La Guardia, and Raleigh-Durham. Please arrive at least 2 hours prior to scheduled departure time."
AA at BWI isn't too bad, as long as you can use the F line.
I flew out of there on early Tuesday AM (had to wait 15 minutes in the F line mainly because of only one agent and one family that took a long time to process), and then observed the lines again on my way back Wednesday PM and again picking someone up Saturday AM. America's 5 worst flights to take + 5 U.S. airports to avoid, if :: Nov 30, 2005 Consider: It can take more than an hour to get from points within .. get to OAK or SFO, get through security, wait around for the delayed http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1531305/postsHOME |
Early Tuesday AM, the regular check-in lines were long and wound around a few times before going back down the hall by Starbucks. I saw the same thing Saturday AM and it appeared longer (with nobody at all in the F line).
So I could see it taking over an hour to clear that line, although they were calling out for people on flight times that were coming near.
Security lines weren't too bad ... still took 15 to 20 minutes on Tuesday AM, and looked about the same on Saturday.
The Southwest lines, especially the security line for pier B ... looked like hell, however. Every time I see them, I find myself saying that I've never seen the lines that long before, and then the next time, they're even longer.
I'd guess that there's a bit of exaggeration going on here. If it actually took 5 hours, every plane would be leaving empty. After all, even these days, who gets to the airport 5 hours prior to departure? And, they can't hold flights for any substantial length of time because of the downstream effects later in the day.
I don't understand this. I flew from BWI last Sunday at 2pm, and there was no line at all. A few Sundays ago I flew at 6pm, and there wasn't a line then either. When I arrived on Saturday in the morning, I saw huge lines, and I asked the agent what was going on. She said someone didn't get screened, and they had to re-screen everyone, but normally it's not like that at all.
