I first found my way to Flyertalk a few years ago when, playing by the rules, a daytrip YOW-YYZ in Y reached $600.
Today, I needed to book a trip for May 17. The $49 fare each way seemed reasonable enough, so I entered the booking, taking the $7.00 "no cancellation" discount.
Bing! The booking engine said: We have another price -- $11 each way. Deduct the $7.00 and you get a $4.00 fare, or $8.00 return! (Taxes are still there, of course; the total bill still approaches $80.00).
Flight times were reasonably convenient; with access to the MLL with the Amex card, I'll do okay here. But if I had taken the $3.00 savings for no aeroplan points, and the further discount for no baggage, would the airline PAY me to fly this route.
Things have changed. Obviously there is no need to burn aerplan points for these flights! I tried to duplicate it for the same outbound date on both YOW-YYZ-YOW and YEG-YVR-YEG.
Somehow you got a glitch, I think.
Booked for my partner and I to fly July 1st weekend,,,got $11 for both tickets each way,,,took the three tango discounts so AC owed us money to fly..so just taxes...cost $124 for 2 tickets return,,,that is cheaper than I can ever remember...less Jetsgo penny fares..but only were avail in one direction...:) ^
Yes, again the posted $49 fare on a one way 8 a.m. flight YYZ YOW May 18 turned to $11 when I booked -- then with the no baggage, no aeroplan points and no cancellation provisions, the fare ended up at minus $4., with taxes total cost for one way ticket about $35.00.
Something tells me there is a bloodletting going on here -- as long as Westjet advertises $29 fares, AC will undercut on any matching routes; the interesting thing is this fare war may continue for some time as bothairlines are in reasonably solid shape and have profitable routes elsewhere to subsidize the losses in the YOW-YUL-YYZ triangle.
Certainly my employee meeting costs are really low -- it is costing more in shuttle fees to get to the airport than to fly!

Fares are still there, but may not show up correctly. I booked YYZ-YOW next Wed, return Thurs. I chose $29 fares that are good times for me to travel.
Upon confirmation, the fares were repriced to $11 less $12 for no cancelation or changes, and no baggage. Total return fare ($2) plus taxes, fees et al. to a total of just over $70.

Perhaps prices changed at midnight? I had a quick look and was able to find a number of $11 and $29 fares, similar to earlier in the week between YYZ and YOW/YUL.
I booked 2 seperate flights to/from YUL on WS for those prices last week. I think AC is matching it. Dang! I would have got a chance to fly on the 777
