    1. What exactly does PAX mean. I know what it 'means' but what is the exact definition

    2. How do airlines come up with their flight numbers? Is it random, or based on direction, destination, etc?

    thanks!

  • thanks for the info!!!!

  • All of these acronyms and short form words came from the days of teletype traffic, which was the primary form of airline communications.
PAX is just shorthand for passenger
IROP is short for irregular operations
    MTC for maintenance
    WXX for weather
    EQP for equipment
    ACFT for aircraft
.... and thousands of others. I don't know of an actual dictionary of terms.

I bet Shareholder and I are the only ones here, that ever had to send long teley messages. :)

  • The numbering system is random through out the industry, but within an airline has some vague meanings. The only general rule is odd numbers one direction and even numbers on the return. There was one restriction years ago that numbers could only be 3 digits long, but tat was raised to 4 digits years ago.

Within the AC system the hard rule used to be:
2 digits reserved for charters and internal flights (positioning, test, publicity)
    1xx were for longhaul transcons
2xx intercity Western Canada (Winnipeg west)
    3xx Transborder shorthaul
    4xx Rapidair east
    5xx Cargo and intercity Ontario
    6xx Maritimes
    7xx Longhaul transborder
    8xx International trans-Atlantic
    9xx Carribean, Florida and south
2xxx were extra sections that were added in to augment special traffic (Grey Cup, Xmas extra flying)

then came the big expansion of the mid 1990's, the advent of numbers for code-shares, Regional, Canadian Airlines and although remnants of the original structure remains, there were just not enough numbers to go around.

The structure is still rigidly controlled by Flight Scheduling in Montreal as all of the computer systems depend upon the flight number to allocate revenue, cost, billing, etc to the different departments and budget projections. There are small changes made in the divisions regularely, but many of these old legacy systems are hard coded and difficult to change.

Thus AC is able to divide Domestic, Transborder, International, and 'other'. I get a kick out of every monthly or quarterly report when it gets to 'other'. All of the South Pacific and South American traffic is dumped into there along with HNL/OGG), because years ago the designers never anticipated operating into CP territory.

Some times flight numbers are forced to be changed for safety reasons. Every airline in the world wanted their HKG flights to be numbered 888 as they thought that the Chinese community would be more inclined to buy a seat on that 'lucky' flight. The ATC and other safety authorities had to step in an outlaw most airlines from using that number as it was cause for coinfusion in radio traffic. The same has happened in even small airports like YQM, YFC where the two Air Canada flights had very similiar numbers and one had to be changed.

  • You said it all, exAC. These things came from a simpler time in the commercial aviation world. My summer years at AC res taught me much of this arcane language and how it came into being. And even though we had phones and long distance, most communications, even between Toronto and Montreal, let alone distant stations, was by telex/teletype, because long distance was so expensive. AC's use of one and two digit flight numbers in the active schedule came from the integration of CP flight numbers, particularly on the Pacific routes.

Also a general convention worldwide is that even flight numbers are Eastbound/Northbound, odd numbered one Westbound/Southbound. [There are a couple of anomolies on short hops.] Same goes for the elevation at which aircraft fly [i.e. 30,000 feet would mean the flight is heading east or north while 31,000 feet would denote west or south bound].
