I'm looking for some very cheesy, stereotypical crime novels. The kind in which the detective (usually) narrates and refers to women (who are always throwing themselves at his feet) as "birds" and drinks too much. Like the ones seen in the film "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang".
Does anyone know of any?
Mickey Spillane
Robert Parker (novels with color-themed titles)
Elmore Leonard is the the guy your looking for. He has written a lot of books with "macho" guys and the women who get swooned by them.
Google him
The two authors that inspired that movie are Raymond Chandler and
Dashiell Hammett. They're not considered cheesy, though you may
think them cliched because of all the authors who emulated their style. Peter Crowther interviewed - infinity plus non-fiction:: It sounds cheesy but, hey -- what do I care. Thats the way it was. plus novels by Ed McBain and John D. MacDonald (crime/mystery being my other weakness) http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/intpc.htmHOME | Confessions of an Idiosyncratic Mind: Immutables:: The Crime Fiction Dossier. David Montgomery is a Washington, D.C.-based writer and book reviewer. their covers (which do tend toward cheesy in some cases) http://www.sarahweinman.com/confessions/2004/07/cultural_indice.htmlHOME |
All the little act break titles in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" are taken from
titles written by the two authors listed above. It's an homage to the
influence they had on the filmmakers.
Some books to get you started are "The Big Sleep" and "Farewell, My
Lovely", by Raymond Chandler, and "The Maltese Falcon", by Dashiell
Hammett. If you like those you can read the rest of their works. I like
Chandler best myself, I think his best is "The Long Goodbye."
