SJC was a total nightmare today. I waited 30 minutes to get into the first class line. Then I waited 1.5 hours to get my bag checked in the first class line. There were 2 ticket agents for 1 of those hours. The main cabin line was moving at 3X the spead.
I was sweating and panicing the whole time. The Airport was a complete parking lot. After checking in they wanted me to wait in a security line for another 30 minutes. That would have put me on the plane 20 minutes after take off. Luckily some nice supurvisor let me cut, but boy...
Got in my seat and noticed my bag still wasn't on the plane (I was sitting right above the forward bag hold when they closed it). Right before we pulled out a tuck showed up with about 40 additional bags for all the folks who, like myself, didn't think 2 hours wasn't enough.
Here I was thinking I was going to go relax in the lounge after my quick 10 minute wait in line. Well, what I got was a few heart attacks thinking what would happen if I missed my flight. Thank god I made it home, but shame on American for:
1) not telling me that I should camp out at the checkin line the night before
2) properly staffing the first class line
3) Dealing with the crouds. At one point there was a single line for people checking in, first class, security, and even people trying to leave the airport. And we just had to stand and wait. But all of this was made better by the excellent flight attendants and good food and sleep I got in the front.

CNN has been showing reports all day from LGA where the lines are about 4-hours long. Lots of frustrated people who have missed their flights and are being accommodated as best possible on later flights. Seems to be specific to AA, since they are reporting other carriers at LGA are "normal" under the circumstances.
So what can gate agents and management be thinking when they push back a plane with empty seats--knowing the high probablity that their pax are stuck in a security line? What kind of airport management is that? I've stood in 2 hr security lines and watched as they called out PAX for flights about to be closed out--fine. But to knowingly leave behing pax stuck in lines--adds new meaning to stupidity.

Were you going to DFW on 2476 by any chance? We sent out several carts late. The bagroom was a nightmare today at SJC but you can still count yourself lucky compared to the Southwest passengers who were in tears at the checkpoint and who had to wait in bag check, then security and then gate lines of incredible length. This was one of the worse days I have ever seen, but all my co-workers said it was better than Friday.
Actually I was flying to JFK. I was personally amazed that my bags made it on the plane since I checked in at 8:10 am and my flight departed at 8:35.
Southwest always looks like a disaster to me, and I don't plan on ever flying that airline. AA is often to good to me ;-)
Now I don't get one thing. Once again my bags didn't get the priority tags. I saw a few bags with them on, but they may not have originated from SJC. Either way, the bagage service in JFK is one of the worst IMHO. It took about 45 minutes after landing before the first bag appeared.
Actually, it won't be bump vouchers. Too many people have not been able to clear check-in or security in time to make their flights, so there have been lots of No-Shows. They will get accommodated on later flights when space opens up on those flights. The real nightmare will be for the gate agents who have to close the flights later in the day, dealing with standbys while also knowing that many of their No-Shows are probably still lined up somewhere in the terminal. They will eventually arrive, upset having missed their flight, and joining the waitlist cue for the next flights out.
Didn't expect this many people? Like, nobody checked the load numbers for the weekend before Christmas?

I feel your pain man.. there is nothing i hate more than waiting in seemingly-immovable lines.
I'm flying out of JFK on 12/28 and BWI on 12/30 and have notified my family that they will not, under any circumstances, be checking luggage...
They need to add SFO to their list. Local news just reported that AA is having up to 5 hour delays there because "they never expected this many travelers." http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif
I heard the SFO reports on the radio this morning. They interviewed a UA spokesperson who said that "UA never expected this many travelers."
So these are walk ups?
Come on, turn on your computer a few days before and check your loads for the day. Then, staff accordingly.
JFK was absolutely horrible. The line for security at gates 1-10 went most of the way across the international terminal and then all the way back to the security entrance. Our flight, which was sold out in all classes (thus heavily oversold) left with many empty seats. I am sure I know where those people were. 2 hours would NOT have been enough time.
AA has got to do a better job for its customers. The airline still hires the check-in agents and the companies that provide security. The question is how many people they hire. If they do not hire more, then the lines will go down...as people stop flying. As a PLT for several years now, I cannot imagine ever putting myself through that again. It was just about the most miserable experience I have ever had traveling.
Oh, and the security check? About 10 seconds...
Well, my brother and cousin are leaving SF Bay area for Houston on 12/23. I surely hope that they fly out of SJC...but SJC isn't much better either...especially my cousin is connecting thru DFW...i hope he makes his connection this time.
Oh this is funny, what did they expect? This looks like open season for bump vouchers.
I can't wait to leave on Monday to go home for the holiday. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Where is the travelocity/other site that shows airport checkin delays?
