The new Sony Play Station is a 32 bit videogame console of fifth generation. Launched by Sony Computer Entertainment in December 1994, it was the first of the ubiquitous PlayStation series of console and hand-held game devices. It was the first the PlayStation and PS video game console to reach the 100 million mark. Sony had plans of developing a Nintendo compatible, which was a Sony-branded console more of a home entertainment system playing based on the format used in SNES-CD discs but later got it shelved. .

The PlayStation was launched for the first time in Japan in 1994, later in the U.S. in 1995 and the Europe in the same year. It tasted a huge success in the American continent which was repeated by its successor, the PlaySation 2. The logo of the PlayStation was designed by Manabu Sakamoto, who also designed the logo for Sonys VAIO computer products. PlayStation enjoyed one of the longest production runs in the video game industry since its launch eleven years back.
