That he got a hole in one. so say for example you have a maximum of 3 shots to get the ball in the hole and you get it in 3 holes and not 1 over than that is a birdie.
Each hole on a golf course has whats known as a "Par".

The par for any hole represents how many shots it would take a Professional golfer to get his ball from the tee into the hole.
99% of holes worldwide are either Par 3's / 4's or 5's. Meaning you have either 3 / 4 or 5 shots to get the ball into the hole. (There are a few Par 6's and 7's!!)
When you put the ball into the hole in less shots than the par for that hole you achieve: -
1 Shot under Par = BIRDIE
2 Shot's under Par = Eagle
3 Shot's under Par = Albatross
For Example: -
If it takes you 3 shots to get the ball into the hole on a Par 4 you have scored a Birdie.
This scoring system also has names for the score you have achieved if it takes MORE than the Par for any hole to get the ball down, but most golfers don't like to talk about this!!

So if someone has got "A Couple of Birdies" it means that during the round of golf he has just played he played two of the holes in under par or 1 shot better than the par for that hole.
Before you start praising him ask him ow he did on the other 16!! I'm kidding!!

there is a "par" on a particular hole (the amount of club strokes it should take to put the ball in the hole). a birdie is getting the ball in the hole one stroke under par.
A couple of holes on the course, the golfer scored one stroke less than par. For example he shot a 4 on a Par 5, then shot a 2 on a par 3 and then shot a 3 on a par 4. His score is negative
Actually it means he was one stroke under par on a couple of holes.
