Hey everybody!
I'm working on a sand-box style RPG for pre-young teens and I thought I'd just say hi :) It has a myst like perspective (You see the room but not your character, 'sides a hand) but I'm not using any 3D software, so it looks really vector and cartoony.
Does anyone know of any resources for games like mine?
Also, good examples of flash forums/chatrooms would be great to!
I've read the RPG section here, but it's not really that relevant(sp).

History of my game: (If you want to keep reading.)
My RPG is called Tpeaks (Used to be Three-Peaks, then Tui-peaks, etc) and I ran it for the first time on a homestead site with free, advert covered forums (Ew! :to: ) and a lovely purple and cream colour scheme. I was (And I am still) amazed at how popular it was, so I saved up my pocket money and got a real host.
3 years later, it was a still a neat little text-based sand-box RPG, but I have bigger ambitions! Tpeaks was shut down when I ran out of money for hosting. I'm living alone now, and my tertiary course (Diploma of Multimedia) is coming to an end, so I'm re-designing Tpeaks and creating a demo version for my end of course project. I'll be making the full version once my course is complete.
In the future, I'd like to see Tpeaks up and running and being fully self-suficient, so I can just enjoy role-playing there in a nice, family-friendly enviroment, knowing that the hosting bills will be paid by integrated, non-intrusive advertising... *relaxes into chair sipping orange juice sporting a colourful umbrella...* 18 free 3pg videos::

It's not 3D. I've already said this twice.
I'M NOT MAKING A GAME IN 3D! I WILL NOT USE ANY 3D SOFTWARE!
(Except for the duelling arena, which is built in Lightwave, then Swift to Flash...)
The rooms are just drawn in a style which makes it look kinda 3D. They call it 'isometric drawing' or 'drawing with perspective'.

well if youre talking about more realistic 3d rendering in flash using drawing API, it would be REALLY hard, and flash is not designed for that so maybe it would run slowly, but maybe possible, im thinking dynamic gradient fills for the face of 3d objects so itll look more real
for 3d, if you knew how to use all of these... you could go from 3D studio Max to Swift 3D and then to flash... just an idea
Hmm... SeiferTim has got me wondering about plots and I've started working on a nice and complicated one. Before I get into it, here's a little background about the actual site/game.
First off, there are only 30 players. See, anyone can visit Tpeaks. Even if you're not signed up, you can play games and wander through the 'world'. When you do sign up, you can post on the sites forums, play all the site games (And levels) and even play a few mini games (Games within the world) but, you're still not a character. And you don't have to be! You can remain a member (Or as we say, Resident) of Tpeaks for as long as you like. But if you're into RPing, or you want to acheive some site 'fame' you can enter (After qualifying) the role-play game. Now when you enter the world, you're a part of it. You can play all the mini games, chat and use forums in the world and become part of the plot, if you want to. The plot is still entirely optional, maybe you'd rather duel all day, or get the highest marks in class, or talk to your friends.

Flash Game Design Competition #3! walkthrough, review, discussion ::
I'd made some simple flash games before, but nothing all that great, so I stuck with a pretty simple "Myst" like interface.

Because you can do all this, I kinda neglected the plot...
So here we go. You enter the RPG, you're sorted into your house, say Earth, and you've started learning spells. You're one of 5 boys (Example people, just an example) in your house, 10 people all together, 30 students totalled. Time is kinda funny here, 5 weeks later the year is over. You've learnt how the system works now and it's easy to get, the people are cool if a little weird and a week later you're back from holidays. Term, or Week 1 of your second year things start to happen. A new teach arrives, he seems ok, a little drippy for a frenchman but ok at the end of the day. Later on in the year he starts talking about how great his aunt is, some biologer or something. You pick up a postcard of his after class, but he left too quickly for you to be able to return it. It's for his Aunt, going on about the magic mountain and the ceremony which isn't gonna happen for like, 3 years. He seems pretty pepped up about it.
Next year, his aunt shows up and takes over the Horticuture classs after a nasty teacher accident. She's alright, but teaches you baby stuff instead of what you should be learning. She seems to rely heavily on her teachng manual. Odd how he seemed to gush over so much, but hey. Soon people start noticing od things about the community. And when the 12th Tree starts wilting, as if it might die, panic is greatly increased.
When you come back as a grown 14 year old, the same old signs are there, and so is the frenchman's aunt....
Ugh. My brain hurts from thinking of it in this perspective. Bah. Must lie down...
I updated it to about 500k for the lot, so that should help out some people!

Hey, this game project looks interesting, BlueBoots ;) Kudos on setting that up.. But it looks like you've got some more work before it'll be a fully-loaded Myst clone :P I haven't been working in Flash for that long, so I can't help you with anything, but I thought I'd take a look around this forum (as I'm going to school for game design, in addition to web).

I don't want to confuse yall, but it's not going to be a clone of myst... I just used myst as an example. Now I am better educated, I would say it's a 1st person point and click graphic adventure/RPG sandbox online game! (Phew!)
The idea was actually based off of harry potter, when I ran it as a text based RPG; it got so big however that WB made me shut it down so the new one has broken off the HP mold. Thinking about it, I need some help with this:
In the game world, your character is a one of many magi, or magical folk. I think i'm going to call an individual magical person a magus, or maybe just mage...
Anyway, I have to come up with some classes. (Think RPG classes) You gain your class after graduating the highschool (Til then you're just 'Student'). How you get your class is by taking 'classes' or lessons at the school, and playing the virtual TCC. For example, if you excel in your Enchantment lessons and you enchant lots of objects when battling, more than anything else, when you graduate you leave as an Enchanter.
Coming up with classes is tricky because the trading card game is still in development; but I know some general ones for battling and I was wondeing if people could give me some ideas... (Like Enchanter, Summoner, etc)

I'm uploading this (http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/jimsaund/rpg.html) to my testing server right now. Click on "The Academy" to play the demo in a new browser. Most of the site is broken so don't bother, but the Flash RPG shows the beginings of:
- How the walk through runs
- Tpeaks Time(TM)
- The Dialogue box
- Mood Indicator and Mood Points (TM)
- Inventory system
- The Map
- Initial character development (the librarian)
- And yeah, cool stuff.
I think it's neat, anyway...

This is all owned by Splatenz and my boss (Even though I made it, sigh)
I'm not going for realistic... I think that's a little out of my league!
The interface is a colletion of edited bitmaps and vectors graphics, which can be shown or hidden, revealing the 'scene' which is a static (most of the time) drawn in Flash, completely vector image. It gives it a really weird style, that I think fits the image of the game well. :)
Will post the demo when it's done.
Note:
I'm having pre-loader problems, check your status bar, it is loading!
You'll see the preloader at about 95%, don't ask me why...
The whole thing (The demo is designed for the presentation, not the web) is about 4mb, so slow users beware!
