In the Precious Legacy Exhibit shown in the U.S. about 10 years ago,
there was a mug made for a burial society by a Jewish artist from
Ceska Lipa named Bacher. Please find out his first name and as much
biographical information about him, his ancestors, relatives, and
descendants as possible.
Dear ivan29,
I have contacted the Jewish Museum in Prague, the owner of the objects
from the Precious Legacy Exhibit. Since Monday will be a holiday, I
don't expect an answer before Tuesday, maybe even later. I beg for
your patience.
Best regards,
Scriptor
To clarify the original request. The full name of the Jewish artist
is Wetzel Baecher. The second name is an alternate spelling for
Bacher with an umlaut over the 'a'. The information originally
requested is still desired. thank you. Dear ivan29,
I finally recieved an answer from the Jewish Museum in Prague,
containing all that is known about the mug's origin. But I don't know
if you will like the information, since it is not quite what you might
expect. Since we are not allowed to post answers in Clarifications or
comments, I would like to get your approval for giving you the
information I got from Prague as an answer.
Best regards,
Scriptor
Dear Scriptor:
I would like to know what you found out about Wetzel Baecher. I have
also found out that he may not have been an artist but a member of the
cremation society for whom the mug was made. I am interested in any
information you can provide about the Baecher family living in Ceska
Lipa, including dates and names. Thank you. I. Backer
Dear ivan29,
I don't feel that I can provide you enough valuable information to
justify payment. So I will give you the answer I recieved from the
Jewish Museum in Prague for free:
"Dear Mr Xxx,
I am very sorry, but the informations you have are incorrect. The
object is
a tankard of weavers' guild, and according the inscription on the lid,
where
the name Bacher is mentioned, Ferdinand Weisman and Wenzel Bacher were
chairmans of this guild in 1842. In fact, we are not sure that this
tankard
is from Ceska Lipa. It is based on another inscription, which says
that
Leopold Zinner from Ceska Lipa, Jewish junior journeyman dedicated
this
tankard to the guild, but there is no location of the guild.
It came to the Museum through "Treuhandstelle", therefore is
impossible to
find real provenance of the tankard.
It is descripted in Precious Legacy Catalogue, p.252, cat. no. 148.
(please note that reference to the picture is a print error, there is
no
picture).
Yours sincerely,
Jaroslav Kuntos,
Curator of Metalwork"
So the object is, alas, a dead end. Also, I have not been able to find
anything about one of the persons mentioned, despite extensive
research. I hope you are not too dissapointed with this result.

Ivan,
Considering that no answer was provided so far
and the word 'any' in your clarification
" ... any information you can provide about the
Beacher family living in Ceska Lipa "
I will list few resources related to Jewish genealogy in Bohemia
even though I was not able to locate specific record.
If you feel info is not useful and worth the price -
I will withdraw it.
The search may turn out to be process involving
entering data and names into a database and waiting
and/or joining a SIG (discussion group) such as this one
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen/DiscussionGroup.htm
A site dedicated to the study of Jewish
genealogy in the regions of
Bohemia, Moravia and Austria:
http://www.jewishgen.org/bohmor/familianten.html
Ceska Lipa is listed under code J34 as having
records on Jewish genealogy and addresses of
professional researchers who can search them for you
are on the page:
http://www.jewishgen.org/bohmor/towns/gundframe1.html
Ceska Lipa is county seat, in North Bohemia, the city hall site
http://www.mucl.cz/index.php?clanek=26
has history page in Czech only, but with photos.
Here is the address of the regional archive which is
open to public.
http://archiv.oku-cl.cz/
Chances are that an English e-mail
query will bring an answer in English
but your best bet is probably an professional
researcher or discussion group mentioned above.
