The number of prescription medication commercials is at an all-time high. In fact, The FDA is charging Big Pharma more to approve TV commercials faster, so drug companies can put more ads on TV faster. Big Pharma will then pass these costs — as well as the costs of the additional commercials they will presumably now be able to broadcast — on to you, the consumer. Despite more ads being ran on TV, the FDA as not upped its manpower to deal with the recent inflation in commercials. According to an article on Forbes.com,
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued fewer warnings to drug companies for false and misleading direct-to-consumer advertising and is taking longer to act on such infractions, says a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report released Thursday. Between 1997 and 2001, the FDA took an average of two weeks to issue warning letters to drug companies about ads that violate federal rules. Between 2002 and 2005, it took an average of four months to issue such letters, the report said. The GAO also found that the number of warning letters issued by the FDA fell by about half between those two time periods, the Associated Press reported.” The Blotter: OxyContin: The Giuliani Connection:: the Clinton administration loosened up restrictions on that kind of advertising. is interesting to me that the FDAs own information about OxyContin is that http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2007/05/oxycontin_the_g.htmlHOME |
This shows the lack of regulations the FDA places on pharmaceutical companies. In fact, the FDA only has six employees in charge of reviewing the material despite the recent flood of drug commercials. They focus on ads with the greatest potential to affect public health, said the U.S. Health and Human Services Department the FDAs parent agency told Forbes.
Even though a recent letter from the FDA asked the White House to provide more funding more money to review and regulate direct-to-consumer drug advertising, with the amount of protection the government and the FDA provide the pharmaceutical industry, I’m sure it was nothing more than lip service.
